You know, I love alot of anime films (i.e, Ninja Scroll, Wicked City, Kite:Uncut, Appleseed) but there has been only one Anime series that I like, even after trying to watch countless others - Neon Genesis Evangelion. Nothing I have heard about or seen comes close to that masterpiece. I can't wait for the 4 new Eva movies coming out!!

robotech is mid 80's, about 1984 I reckon.
Thundercats isn't even Anime (however good it is though) again Thundercats is about 1987, same with Transformers.
I am unfamiliar with your other two in your list.

Gatchaman the original Anime dates back to 1972, Battle of the Planets the English version of it came out in 1978 hot on the heels of episode IV (star wars). Astroboy and Speed Racer both go back to about 1966 or so, some of the earliest Anime to ever reach western audiences along with Prince Planet and Gigantor.

But Naruto, Bleach, Onepiece, Full Metal Alchemist and Deathnote is also manga. Most animes originate from mangas

1. Ah! My Goddess (hey, what can i say, its a top series, Kosuke Fujishima knows how to make a great series)
2. El Hazard: Magnificent World/Kaleido Star/Kiddy Grade (Hard to decide between them
3.Steel Angel Kurumi (first season only)/You're Under Arrest (another great series by Fujishima)/Read or Die (OVA and TV series)

No, its anime, being that it was adapted from the manga it was based from. Majority of manga are based on their manga counterparts
