Wii Hardware \ Help with North American migration

Hi folks, I've just moved to Aus from Canada and was not surprised to find that my Wii won't work none too well over here. There are three problems that I was hoping some of the more technically inclined folks could help out with.

1) The AC adaptor is NA, which says:
RVL-002 (USA)
INPUT: AC 120V 53W 60Hz
OUTPUT: DC 12V 3.7A
I am not by any means an electrician. (Despite being a comp sci grad, the electricity maths never clicked.) The physical prongs on the NA adaptor I have are no problem to convert; I have one of those. It's the damn Input voltage/frequency. If I'm not mistaken, the AUS mains are 240V/50Hz, which I'm pretty worried about plugging my pitiful NA adaptor into. However, I wonder if Nintendo just printed that because you're not supposed to use the Wii outside its region.

2) The video signal here is different. My Wii outputs NTSC while your TVs take PAL. I've heard that most modern TVs can cope fine though. Anyone know any better?

3) The games. I brought a few with me, but I suspect I'll want to buy some new ones at some point. I'm a little up in the air about paying AUD$100 for a game though, since we pay $60 in Canada. I may just buy from Canada, but just in case, is there an easy way to play AUS games on a NA system. I've personally never messed around with modchips, but I've heard there exist discs to bypass the region checking.

Thanks for any feedback.

I'm studying electrotechnology, so I may be able to help out a little.

Yes, it is true Australia uses 240V/50Hz, and I'm pretty sure there is an adapter of some sort that converts this sort of thing.

Sorry, I wasn't a BIG help, but yeah...

Yeah nah your Wii won't work because it is NTSC all our electrical products are Pal. You would have had 120v power in the states/Cananda and yeah in Australia we have 240v thats why if you switch the button on the back of your comp it will change it to American power supply and boom lol. So looks like you will need an Aussie Wii

well it may be a good idea just to buy a PAL version wii. most TV's have PAL and NTSC playback. 50Hz and 60Hz or something with that but as for plugging it onto a wall i'd get urself a decent converter. wouldnt wanna blow your wii up. be worth nothing then. but i guess if your only paying $60 for a game i Canada may be worth getting everything set up properly. oh and dont ever pay $100 for a game. wait til they go on sale.

If you go to an electronics store, you will be able to find a power converter, all you do is plug the power cord into the adapter and plug that in the wall, that will take care of number 1.

Most modern TVs should have a specian channel for NTSC. Mine does anyway., you should be able to adjust the settings through there.

As for the games, you should just buy them from amazon.com or something like that... you would get the games cheaper then us and also you will probably get ones that have not been released here yet. You could also get you Wii chipped... but i dont know a lot about that.

You could sell your Will on ebay or something and buy a new one?

just purchase a local Wii to save you all the trouble, then sell you NTSC on ebay and just ship it overseas. i'm sure you'll sell it easy, there are still Wii shortages in some parts of the world.

Cant you just get a nintendo wii au power cable from nintendo australia and then just take your wii in for a wiikey. There is always a first time. Then you can pick and choose the best games from here and there.

Oh and welcome mate. Ive had a few Canadians working for me. From Victoria.

Wouldn't that just fry the Wii...

All of the transformers and capacitors and electronic stuff (yes that is a technical term) would be 110v or whatever the north american standard is, then when you flow 240v through the unit wont it just go bang?

you have no idea the power thing from na converts 110v to 12v and the aus one converts 240v to 12v of cors it will work any way even just 110v though a wii wood corz a fire a boom

the wii operates at 10-12volts DC and 3.7amps so the siggeret lighter in your car will do it fine

Y can get a massive power converter (check ebay) only thing though it will put strain on ur wii because its original current is not for australia. So in other words it will work but sometime in the future u might end up frying ur wii thats about it

Hello fellow canadian in OZ, Im from Peterborough Ont. You can buy stepdown transformers (115V - 240v) but a good one will set you back, I have 3 step down convertors.

Unlike in Canada, where everything is locked to the NTSC system (I know canada is getting better), most electronic products here suport NTSC. Also most DVD players are capable of Multiregion playback, its almost impossable to find a multi region DVD player in Canada.

and since Australia dosnt have realy high import duties and taxes (I think there are none for items under $500), unlike Canada, its worth your while sourcing games and DVDs from North America. Amazon sites will not send Games to Australia, but will send DVDs/Books/CDs.
