Sorry to say it, but I have a D-Link router similar in design to a D-Link ADSL2+ modem, and mine has never gotten hotter than about 40C. You probably wedged it somewhere tiny and covered up the vents, or put it somewhere in the sun.
But I know that some modems are in fact badly designed. My Netcomm modem, for instance, has the vents on the bottom of the unit, with about 3mm clearance from the table to the vents. I actually use the unit upside down so it doesn't die.
