But I know that some modems are in fact badly designed. My Netcomm modem, for instance, has the vents on the bottom of the unit, with about 3mm clearance from the table to the vents. I actually use the unit upside down so it doesn't die.

Well that definately doesn't help the poor modem/router. Geez. I've never personally experienced D-Link hardware blowing up like that. All I know is their 302g adsl modem (optus) is crap for xbox live.
