Yup that's exactly what Nintendo plans on doing. Online gaming will be governed by the Friend Codes made famous on the Nintendo DS. Basically, every game has a Friend Code. If you want to challenge a friend, you must have their unique game Friend Code (not to be confused with their console Friend Code) on your "Friends list".

Every online game will have their own "Friends list" so you will have to input a new friend code into your list everytime you get a new online game.

Firstly, you will need a broadband internet connection. Secondly, you will need a device that allows you to wirelessly share your broadband connection. In this case, you will either neet a wireless router or a Nintendo WiFi USB adaptor. I say opt for the Nintendo USB adaptor because it's cheap and gets the job done.
Insert the Nintendo WiFi USB adaptor into one of the USB ports in your computer. Configure your settings and follow all the instructions on how to set your device up.

And now you profit! Simply turn your Wii or DS on and establish an internet connection. The WiFi signal should stretch pretty far (the manual should say roughly how wide the radius is) so just stay withing the signal's reach. And as for "who" you can challenge, if it's anything like the DS games I say you can choose whether you want to challenge people locally or globally.

I heard that the new Mario Strikers soccer game for the Wii will be a bit of a nightmare when it comes to online gaming. Apparently there will be a separate friend code for the game as well as the Wii code...

This is the same as the DS system, and this will apply to every online game. You can still have random anonymous matches — the only thing you need a Friend Code for is if you want to play with a specific person. The Wii's Friend Code is only used for sending things between consoles, like messages.

I think everyone is a little confused by that. I thought the whole purpose of the Wii friend code was for online gaming as well. It seems a little long winded when you have to get two codes for someone, instead of it based on just the Wii code.

I'm not too fussed about online gaming. I got into xbox live when it first came out on xbox 1 and I have gold on my 360 but never use it to play against others. The best multiplayer sessions I've had has always been with another person in the same room. I like online features like messaging, downloads, updates etc but online gaming seems to be a huge deal now for consoles.Like it will make or break the Wii and it won't.Online gaming is still for the game lover - not the casual gamer. It's a good feature but it doesn't break the game for me. The Wii is made for multiplayer with others next to you.Apart from MMORPGs, I prefer to play with others on the same console.

You don't need two codes to get to a friend. You only need the Friend Code that you get from pairing the game and the Wii unit together. Confusing, maybe, but very safe. Nintendo's main audience is children, so having things like voicechat, gamer accounts, IRC and so forth exposes children to the sick workings of the internet. By pairing Wii units and games together to get a Friend Code, a user can sell a game or their console without another player being able to then divine their personal information.

It does make sense. I know if it was my kids (which do not exist yet) i would feel safer with this system then with many of the online games around. I mean if you know how you can use google to get anyones username for just about any website. These friend codes are very secure.

Not only can you use Google to find usernames, but you can use usernames to find email addresses, and if an email address leads to a domain name, then a Whois means you are totally pwned.

Well, ultimately the new consoles aren't 100% safe for children. I think the safest option for children is to not let them online at all...gaming wise anyway.
