From Reggie:

What I will tell you about 'Metroid' is that 'Metroid' will be fabulous," he said. "I think it's fair to say that all of us were disappointed with the sales of 'Metroid Prime 2,' [the game's developer] Retro included. The focus on 'Prime 3' is to make that the stellar game for a first-person experience on the platform. ... What that means is we're going to make sure it's perfect when we launch it. I think this is one where your readers — the fans of Nintendo, the core gamer — need to recognize that when we release it, it will be perfect. And if that's a little later than folks would have liked, I'm hoping they're going to be happy. They certainly seem to be happy that we took our time with '[The Legend of Zelda: Twilight Princess.' " With that kind of talk, the obvious follow-up question was: "If it's perfect, does that mean it's going to be online?" In response, Fils-Aime said: "That's perfect for you."

Reggie Discusses Wii Shortages, Game Drought
By Jason R. | Posted on Feb 16, 2007

Anyone looking for a Wii could tell you that the system is impossible to find, and in an interview with MTV, Nintendo of America president Reggie Fils-Aime acknowledged this. He also discussed a variety of other topics, ranging from DS Lite shortages to Metroid Prime 3.

The biggest question on gamers' minds right now is why the Wii is so hard to find. Fils-Aime addressed this issue, telling MTV that there is in fact a stock problem. The Big N was able to meet its goal of manufacturing four million units last year, but adding the Wii Sports pack-in slowed down the shipment process.

"We apologize that it continues to be a difficult problem to get your hands on [a Wii]," Fils-Aime said. "The fact is, we manufactured four million Wii consoles by the end of the calendar year. Our challenge was getting them not only into our warehouses and then into warehouses of our retailers, but there is some handling of the consoles in terms of putting the Wii Sports disc in. That whole inventory chain is what prevented us from selling all four million that had been produced."

Surprisingly, the DS Lite has been experiencing shortages as well, which Fils-Aime confirmed. "We put everything in the marketplace that we humanly could by December 25th. But from December 26th until mid-January, we were effectively out of stock." He went on to say that, "It's going to be tight probably until March. And then as we gear up for the April 22nd launch of Pokemon Diamond and Pearl things should certainly open up at that point."

On the software front, the Wii has been undergoing what some consider to be a game drought, at least when it comes to first-party titles. Fils-Aime claims that this isn't the case, as third-party support has grown, providing a steady flow of games. But where are Nintendo's own games? "They're coming," promised Fils-Aime. "But we're being very strategic when we're going to launch them. And we're making sure our licensees enjoy success on their titles and that the spacing makes sense."

One title in particular, Metroid Prime 3: Corruption, was supposed to help prevent the software drought. But as many have noticed, the game has been delayed numerous times. MTV asked why the Wii sequel isn't out yet, to which Fils-Aime replied that it has to be "perfect." Both Nintendo and developer Retro Studios were disappointed with Metroid Prime 2's sales, so they're hoping to make Corruption "...the stellar game for a first-person experience on the platform." MTV then asked if the perfection would lead to an online mode, to which Fils-Aime replied, "That's perfect for you."
