I love this article! Both parties are saying they dont care about the other, but Harvey pisses me off for not selling GC stuff and now wanting Wii. I like how NIntendo says 'we would be taking stock from retailers who have supported us'

Pfft. Nintendo are in the wrong in this case. They have screwed retailers over time and time again. The reason Harveys and other stores dropped Gamecube was because of Ninty's terrible trading terms. All game companies are bad but Nintendo is by far the worst for trading terms. I had to deal with them very often in my previous job.. what a nightmare.

What specifically is so bad about their trading terms?

It seems odd to me that some seem to be claiming that Nintendo are squeezing the margins out from retailers yet at the same time a fair number of the stores are managing to offer the consoles at a discount rate.

Then again it seems fairly odd that they are offering them at a discount rate at a time when they could sell every single one they had at RRP if they wanted to.

How come no other retailers had any problems selling Wii and watching them march right out the door? I think you'll find that Harvey Norman has a bit of a history doing this as it did exactly the same thing when the original XBOX was released and they were the only dealer that never sold it back in 2002.

Do you think that's just a conicidence that the same thing has happened twice? There's no way in hell it is. The fact is Harvey Norman obviously wanted a bigger piece of the Wii pie whinch EVERY other retailer agreed to and Nintendo told them in no uncertain terms to stick it up their a*se and rightly so. Now they're paying the price accordingly.

I have no doubt that they asked for a bigger slice of the pie. Being the largest computer retailer in Australia gives you a fair bit of opportunity to do just that. My qualm with Nintendo is not that they can tell HN to stick their push for more margin (I'm all for that).. my issue is the trading terms which are far too harsh, more so than any other manufacturer. Firm Sell on software is just ridiculous, and this is a Nintendo trading term.

Forgive my ignorance DoGGpound but what exactly does firm sell on software mean? I can only take it that it's a bad thing but the obvious question is why does it only seem to bother Harvey Norman and no other retailer in Australia?
