Social \ Miyamoto On How Nintendo Are Making Game Series, Such As Zelda, For Everyone.

In a recent interview which Miyamoto was asked questions one question was:

With your new focus on user-friendly controls and playability, will this approach play into, for example, future iterations of Mario and Zelda? Will this affect game design in any way?

Miyamoto's answer was this:

Frankly, some of the so-called “franchise games” are quite difficult for nongamers to play, so making accessible games for these players is key. With Zelda, we have to consider how to make it accessible for new gamers to pick up and play and enjoy just as hardcore gamers have. For example, we’ve got the Touch Generations series. Now, we’re not necessarily going to make our “franchise” games in that style, but we’ll take what we know and have learned — the philosophy behind those games — and incorporate it into franchise games. That’s a philosophy that’s very strong at Nintendo.

So how would you feel if Nintendo killed your beloved games like Zelda, heck even the new Pikmin might have a completely new casual design to apply to the casual fans more than the Pikmin Fans.

Eh. They wrecked Mario Kart in that sense, to casual gamer friendly. Next will be Zelda.

You people are nuts. Nintendo haven't destroyed anything. All they've done is made the game enjoyable to everyone, rather then to just those who've played previous games. I hate making this stupid seperation between "hardcore" and "casual" gamers.

In definition, I'm neither casual, nor hardcore. I'm not "casual" because I know and love many different Nintendo franchises and play them more then enough to know everything about them, yet, I have a real life and I do not play them nearly enough to be considered "hardcore".

I like to think of myself as a "moderate" gamer... something in between casual and hardcore. In fact, they should stop making these stupid seperations, and go back to just calling us ALL gamers.

But yeh, I for one like Nintendo's approach on things, getting more people into games. Being a gamer is not something that should be exclusive to the likes of us... it should be shared.

I'm not hardcore..
They didn't ruin MK:Wii
Its good because, my sister, her friends, my friends etc. When they come over, we can just hop on MK and have a race or 2. They don't have to hav excellent skil lto have fun though,
Think of others. What you want Nintendo to make a remake of MK for hardcore gamers? Make them lose alot of money because the families of casual gamers wont but it?

Nintendo are going the wrong way about it.

Does every game have to be suitable for every person?

Surely Zelda should appeal to fans of the series and Mario should appeal to fans of the series.

It would be like making a Terminator movie where the Terminator lights a brown bag of dog poo, rings John Connor's doorbell and runs - just so it can be family friendly.

It is nonsensical to make every game appeal to people who cant play games.

If they dumb down Zelda, it will be the end of the series.

I'm happy with some Mario games, like Super Mario Galaxy to go casual, and it did. Mario Kart, no. SSBB, no. Zelda, no. They shoudl think about which should go casual and which should not.

Regiie said before MK:Wii was released: "It's the first Mario Kart where someone new to the series can stay bumper-to-bumper to a Kart veteran."

Something along the lines of that. Mario Kart Wii was toned down, HEAPS! Maybe Zelda next!?

Well brawl certainly wasn't "toned down", so we should be fine. And why do people hate mario kart so much? You still have the option to use gamecube or classic controllers...

Mario Kart is too much based on luck.
You have more chance of winning if you stay last until the last lap, and get some really good items.

EDIT: Did it ever occur to Nintendo to release a difficulty level with their games? I would love to tackle Zelda on a harder difficulty and finish it. That would be an achievement.

Yeah, but it's been like that ever since the 64 version... even on the DS. I'm not sure about the SNES one, since I've never played it.

So how, exactly, was mario kart wii "toned down"?

The SNES version was difficult. The only reason the wii is better is because it offers more tracks, characters and it has an online mode.

But racing wise, the SNES version was easily the best.

Mario Kart Wii is not that easy. You ability to win depends largely on your ability to boost, drift and mono. While items pay some part, casual gamers will not win against experts.

Experts don't always win, but the items dont make the casual gamers win, they just make the expert driver lose.

Mario Kart Wii since the 64 days has been about luck with items. Not much has changed. So I dont see this game as a step backward for the wii, it has always been like that since Miyamoto left it to do better things.

The reason I sold my Wii is because Nintendo dumbed down Zelda and Mario to such an extent that I didn't enjoy them anymore. Nintendo might've gained a lot of new fans, but there's no question this approach is alienating many of their older fans.

They've got a market philosophy and they're sticking to it, which is fine, but it IS deviating from what they used to be about. If Nintendo wants to dumb down its franchises so Grandma can play, fine, but they'll need to provide something with a bit more meat if they want to win me back.
