I don't think it has anything to do with the usb ports at the back. If you have the Nintendo Wi-Fi adapter thingy that goes into your computer, or you use a wireless router.

The wii has an inbuilt wireless network card, so if you have a wireless router you connect like a laptop or pc would with wireless cards. Now if you dont have a wireless solution, you will need to purchase the usb adapter. This converts the usb to an ethernet connection. You can then plug in an ethernet cable and run it to your router/modem. The only thing is you need to wait until March(?) for that adapter to come out. There is a 3rd party adapter you can buy for it, just google it. You will need broadband for the wii to work correctly as dial up would be painful and you need an ethernet/wireless connection anyway.

With the USB Ethernet adapter it would be best to buy one through a company that will let you return it if it does not work...

Because there is currently no official Nintendo adapter out.

But the KINAMAX USB 2.0 to RJ45 Fast Ethernet 10/100 Base-T Network Adapter has been reported working.
