Wii Hardware \ Is overheating common?

In all it's 6 months of life I don't think I have ever turned it off by hand... It seems to over heat everytime I play it, thus killing the power. Sometimes it overheats after just 20 mins of playing, and sometimes it lasts up to a few hours before it turns off, even when it is a freezing cold day.

My wii is on the edge on top of a cabinet and it is 1.5m away from the front door which I leave open as there is always a cool breeze coming through in afternoons, so it should get plenty of ventilation. I keep it out of the stand so both of the vents are open to the cool air coming through our front door.

I was wondering if this was a common problem, or is my wii just not working properly? also how can I tell if the fan is running?

please help, I've called nintendo like 5 times and they didn't really help much

you could get a cooling stand.

also, my friend had this same problem and what we did was take a rag, wrap some ice in it and put it on top of the wii and it worked pretty good

The overheating problem on the Wii isn't a common problem. Your Wii must've been damaged somehow and caused the air vents to not work properly anymore.

My Wii was dropped once (damn cousins) and it damaged the Wii's air vents. Try sending it to Nintendo, that's what i did and my Wii no longer overheats. Or try getting a cooler stand (e.g mywii.com.au/ ) it cools your Wii when it's on. Though it'll kind of feel like it's on life support or something.

The ventilation in the Wii isn't the greatest and in select cases it does affect the wii. I've had the gpu burn up on me twice now (the black snow) but fortunatly I'm still under warranty.

My wii happens to be on the second floor of my house and during the summer months it gets really hot up there which isn't the greatest for my wii. So I don't play it in hot conditions (even with a air conditioner).

Some tips to keeping the wii cool and ventilated from my experience and gathering up the knowledge on these forums:

-Keep it in the vertical position and on the stand After a night of intense Strikers action with my wii horizontal at a friends place I noted that my wii was a little warmer than usual. After playing at home in usual vertical position I noticed that the "black snow" was coming.

-Don't place the wii on carpet.

-Check the wii when your going up to change games to see if its a little warmer than usual. High Graphic games (Zak and Wiki and Strikers) tend to really warm up the system.

-Maybe invest in a cooling stand (haven't done so yet but people have said it solves the "black snow problem").

-If your getting "black snow" or the problem described above persists go see Nintendo. In my experience and reading other people's accounts these type of problems get worse the longer its left unattended to (your buring up your wii).
