Star Trek: Conquest Review - 7/10

Star Trek: Conquest REVIEW BY JOFRA01

Star Trek Conquest is a Real Time Strategy Game by Bethesda Studios for both the Nintendo Wii and Playstation 2. The game gives you the opportunity to play commander of the Federation, Romulan, Klingon, Breen, Cardassian and Dominion Empire as you conquer other races and planets to become the galactic empire.

Story:
We all know that Star Trek is a science fiction series that have rich deep stories that usually fit well together, however this isn't the case with Star Trek: Conquest which actually seems to have no story. You see this game sets you basically in an alternate universe where it's basically every race for themselves as something happened between everyone which now sees them trying to conquer each other and become the ultimate race.

Gameplay:
The gameplay of the game was actually quite enjoyable when you get use to the way things are done in the game. You see when you choose which race you want to be and build up your fleet, however there are only 3 ship options available for each race, you start conquering races and planets.

The fun thing about the game is that although you can see yourself doing a campaign mode that lasts up to close to two hours you don't always have to do the same exact thing when you enter in to battle mode. When you engage in battle mode you will find your ships on screen opposite the enemies ships, and some times buildings with around 4 different buildings available which perform different tasks, you are given the choice if you want instant attack which sees an automatic victory for one side, usually the computer, or a Quick Mode Kind of thing where you don't really engage in battle but just see beams coming out of all the ships attacking the enemies and the only thing you can really do is tell your ships to flee, all power to shields or all power to weapons. It may not sound fun as of now but the third option, the option I used the most, sees you engaging in to a more in depth battle controlling one ship at a time, with the others following and shooting at what you shoot, you see your self flying the ships were you want to and avoiding enemy blasts while trying to destroy them at the same time.

This Is What Quick Mode Looks Like As The Federation Destroy The Ferengi

The game isn't one that really utilizes the Wii Controller or Nunchuk to their full ability as the Nunchuk controls the ships, A Button to shoot and you aim the WiiMote to where you want the Beams to hit. Each race also has three special weapons they can use when you use the research facility which you can buy.

Although there are a few races you can choose to be there are others that you can't such as the Ferengi and Borg, who you can only really be in Skirmish Mode which is quite boring as you only do 1 battle which lasts less than 10 minutes and is kinda disappointing.

You are also given the opportunity on who you want to be in terms of race and you then get to choose your commander, also you can choose how many races you face off against and who those races are. You can have up to three commanders which is good as you can attack from many directions but money wise in the game it will affect you heaps if one dies and they lose all experience they have made.

You are also given the opportunity to choose the difficulty of the game which really affects your opponents attack, how quickly they build up their empire and conquer other planets and effects how long you will be playing campaign mode for. Difficulty also affects how many planets there are in the game.

The only disappointing thing in terms of Gameplay is that no Tutorial was put in place to explain the controls. Also another disappointing thing is that sometimes you will come across a slow down in the game which causes the game speed to drop quite drastically when your playing a battle, yet this seems to only occur when you are versing the Klingons in a certain area.

Graphics:
Visually the graphics of the game are the same as the PS2 Version as there really isn't anything to do in terms of graphics as the space is detailed great, colored black with stars. But seriously the game contains many locations from the Star Trek Series with Planets and stuff and they are as detailed as much as they can.

The ships are also as detailed as they can be and look just like they do on the TV Shows and Movies.

Sound:
In terms of Sound you would probably won't find much other than the Commander you are saying their catch phrase kind of thing which they kind of repeat everytime you move them and it gets very repetitive.

The only other sound is some music, battle music of proton cannons being shot, the commander saying full power to shields, full power to weapons or buildings being destroyed.

Replay Value:
The game contains a Skirmish mode which was probably intended for a replay value thing but really is only disappointing, you would probably find yourself replaying the game in Campaign mode on different difficulty options since it has a more interactive and in depth gameplay feel compared to Skirmish.

Conclusion:
Star Trek: Conquest is a good budget title which you should pick up if you enjoy Star Trek, a fan of Real Time Strategy games and don't have one for the Wii or just want to try out something different.

Story: 6/10
No real story happening here, just every race for themself.

Gameplay: 8/10
Campaign Mode is a lot better than Skirmish mode which is a let down, controls are simple but a tutorial would have really helped.

Graphics: 7/10
PS2 Graphics on this game but really not much of an improvement could have been made anyway in terms of what is actually shown on screen.

Sound: 7/10
Listening to your commander say the same lines over and over again isn't exactly the greatest thing to listen to, except when they say you Win.

Replay Value: 8/10
Skirmish mode don't give replay value but Campaign mode does with it's different difficulty and races to choose from.

OVERALL: 7/10

i would've given the game about a 6/10 but i did enjoy playing it a fair bit i spent about 2 weeks playing it .

i loved the single ship fighting mode the most which made a campaign game last up to 3 or 4 hrs some times lol

yea thanks, the game was actually pretty good for $30 from EB, I spent around the same time playing it also once I had pretty much got my usage out of it.

Yeah was surprised myself that Campaign mode would go for quite some time when on Hard Mode, especially with the Cardassians causing me quite a bit of grief everytime.
