SEGA Superstar Tennis Review - 7/10
SEGA Superstar Tennis REVIEW BY JOFRA01
SEGA Superstar Tennis is SEGA's take on Sport Games that is a tennis game containing many of SEGA's well known characters ranging from Sonic the Hedgehog to NIGHTs. The game also sees you performing Tennis like games in some of SEGA's well known games such as Virtua Cop and Puyo Puyo Fever.
Story:
The game doesn't contain much of a story at all but rather Superstar Modes in which you start off with a choice of several game like modes to choose from that are really based off SEGA Games and are in the same kind of environments from the game they are based off. SEGA have put in a wide variety of Superstar Modes in which you can be any character you have unlocked however a problem most would find is that when in Superstar Mode doing the Sonic the Hedgehog Gameplay Mode there a tons of objectives you are given to do in a tennis court however other Superstar areas such as the Samba de Amigo and Goldenaxe one only have 1 objective for you to which is play a round of tennis, which is simply to easy.
Gameplay:
Gameplay is what you would expect of a tennis game, on the Wii, where you swing the WiiMote to hit the ball. However there are 2 other ways of playing it also with the WiiMote on it's side or the Nunchuk connected into the WiiMote. With the multiple ways of playing you would think that it would be evenly based out for playing however there were many times in the game in which the person with the WiiMote on the side would find it a lot harder to play and the person who is swinging the WiiMote would get it a lot easier, the reason behind this is when swinging the WiiMote you can move the character yourself or the character will move for you but with the WiiMote on the side not only do you need to press buttons to hit the ball but you also need to use the d-pad to move the character around making it more harder.
However there are some positives to this as when in Superstar Mode many of the games you do require the WiiMote on the side, mostly because you aren't hitting the ball but rather avoiding things.
The gameplay also stays the same with basically every character you be but some characters have different areas they are better in such as Sonic is faster, Dr. Eggman has more power for example.
Gameplay also changes when doing some of the minigames, which are quite fun for some of them, for example the Puyo Puyo Fever Minigames actually see you playing a proper game of Puyo Puyo Fever using a SEGA character and hitting the things with a tennis ball and trying to knock the wall down which would make this game more enjoyable for some.
Now when you are actually playing a game of singles or doubles on this game using any character you would find it extremely easy what ever difficulty your on, especially if your using the WiiMote on it's own and are swinging it as it is very hard to miss the ball and sometimes you can go through a whole round with out your opponent hitting the ball once until they serve as they can't even bother to hit the ball back. The only real enjoyment you would probably get out of the tennis game is when your character your being or your opponent actually get to do this special move which adds some fun to the game but it only lasts for a short time and some of the special moves have greater effects than others like Shadow's which teleports the opponent to the other side of the field when they hit the ball so when you hit it back to where they were they can't make it back in time to hit it and NIGHTs who just hit's it a fancy way and confuses you more than the opponent since your trying to find out if they missed the ball or if they hit it back and where to.
Graphics:
The graphics are some what average for a Nintendo Wii game with the opening movie being the best visual piece of the entire game.
The characters are highly detailed but the Court and other in game characters don't have that much going for them and are rather dull and boring. Some of the courts are better than others in terms of quality but none of them really stand out.
The frame rate of the game is also seems to maintain to be the same constantly with no slow down.
Sound:
The game contains much in game unlockable music from previous SEGA games and when doing certain parts of superstar mode, for example Samba de Amigo you will find yourself listening to tracks from the Samba de Amigo game or when playing the House of the Dead Superstar mode you will be listening to those deadly tracks from the series.
Other from in game music there isn't much else with some characters making a sound or two when they win around of tennis doing some smart comment but other than that there isn't really much unless the ball hitting the racket counts.
Replay Value:
The game does have replay value which will see you trying to complete the whole game to unlock all characters, music tracks, courts and minigames.
The minigames such as Puyo Puyo Pop do add more value to this game.
Conclusion:
SEGA Superstar Tennis is probably a game that tries to achieve what Mario Tennis tried to achieve on the gamecube and has achieved that and probably a lot more as this game as both games have the same flaws but SEGA Superstar Tennis offers a lot more to the package.
Story: 7.5/10
No story but Superstar Mode is quite good bringing in many SEGA Game series in to one game.
Gameplay: 7/10
3 Styles of playing the game that are all uneven and normal tennis matches get quite boring but minigames and SEGA Superstar's special moves attempt to make up for it, and are somewhat successful.
Graphics: 7/10
The playable characters are good but courts and other in game characters not that exciting to look at.
Sound: 9/10
In game tracks from previous SEGA games that are unlockable and available to listen to when playing the game is quite a good feature.
Replay Value: 8/10
The game does offer some form of replay value, but not all will stay around to enjoy it.
OVERALL: 7/10

nope I enjoyed playing that game with my mates back in it's day but it has the same flaws of this game but they both have their own little additions that make up for it. I also enjoy a fair few games if you read my other reviews.
