Difficulty: Childish, Yet Still Fun - 7/10
The legendary plumber is back, but his plunger is nowhere in sight. For taking his steps in space, Mario has just set the bar for his next game to an impossible level.
I believe Mario's platforming days are numbered, this game only furthers his demise more. I say this because going into space for a title is a last resort for a series. Once you go up, there's no going back.
Super Mario Galaxy, the best selling game of the next-generation is, in my opinion, a stepping stone down from the high pedestal Mario used to stand proudly upon.
Anyways, on with the review.
Super Mario Galaxy
Concept: You jump, you land, you twist, you twirl, you're done.
Graphics- 7/10
Once again this is a Wii game, so I try to lower my standards but I see way too many great looking games on the other two systems it's impossible for me to say they're good.
The graphics are good for a WII game indeed. Having said that, don't expect a smooth look.
As far as the eyes go, they are very easy on them. The graphics rarely ever make you flinch and the game performs well. I experienced no glitches, but I cannot confirm whether or not you may experience some trouble.
As you can very well see most of the game is going to have pixelated edges, like the old generation. Then again expecting something flawlessly beautiful from the Wii would be like expecting Tom Cruise to actually act well in another movie (of course besides The Last Samurai).
Sound- 9/10
The sounds of Mario have always been pleasant and delighting. Nintendo rarely ever makes mistakes in this department. The music is very enticing, the sound effects play out nicely, and I never felt the urge to reach for my earplugs to block out someone's annoying voice.
This is probably SMG's best area, but it really can't brag seeing as none of the scenes bring any sort of emotion with a wonderfully timed song to help further the mood. I wasn't impressed with the sound, to be honest I quite expected everything as it were. Now don't get me wrong, that was not an insult, rather a comment on how good it was.
Gameplay- 5.5/10
I am splitting this into two parts because I feel as though it's unfair to judge the difficulty along with the actual gameplay.
-The Actual Gameplay- 8/10
I was neither impressed nor disappointed in the gameplay. Just as the sound, it was everything I expected it to be. When you Jump, you jump. When you attack, you attack. There was no changing flow of gameplay, so it was a bit repetitive.
The level designs were great, in fact I'd say some of the best Mario has to offer. This however does not change the fact that the game remains the same throughout.
-Difficulty- 3/10
The game was a huge disappointment in the difficulty meter. I felt almost like Super Mario Elite Soldier Unit Who Can Never Die. It's a mouthful, yes but very accurate in the description. I never once experienced any problems. At the least they could offer a choice in difficulty level. The only option you have in giving yourself a much harder time does nothing seeing as the levels are still no match for anyone who's been playing the game for an hour.
The comets are a failed attempt at giving you more to do.
The timed missions (or speedy comets) are too easy.
The Daredevil comet is easy for someone who can even slightly predict boss moves, and through my years of gaming I'd say the SMG ones are waaaay too predictable.
The Cosmic comet is pretty much a time mission, just you can tell whether or not you'll win based on where the ghost is.
The Fast Foe Comet, well in the two areas it's in, is nothing more than a minor annoyance, you can easily out maneuver the enemies if you've even fought them before.
And lastly, the purple comet. The silent trigger that Nintendo seems to be having fun with. The oldest trick in the book that I thought was a long relic, playing the game twice. Nintendo is running out of ideas, both Super Mario Galaxy and Super Smash Brothers Brawl try to make you play the game twice. It's quite a disappointment that Nintendo stooped to that low of a level.
The Final Words
To sum it up, my opinion of the game is it is an excellent child's game. The difficulty is shot, the graphics are cartoonish; but that's expected; and the sound is one of the greatest the Wii has to offer.
I guess you could say I have mixed feelings, but in all I would recommend this to someone who has $5 to rent it. The game isn't much of a keeper, and the only rewarding experience I got from it was that after trading it in I was given a huge bonus because Gamestop had a special trade-in credit for it.
Super Mario Galaxy is not the best game for the Wii, but it sure isn't the worst.
