Super Mario Galaxy Reviews \ Detail

Super. Mario. Galaxy. Review. Need i say more? - 10/10

Graphics:

the wii wasnt built to accomodate graphics-whores who stare at nothing less than games such as soul calibur 4 and re5. everyone knows that. but super mario galaxy is the clear cut exception to this rule. The beautiful colors and amazingly creative and varied level designs will amaze even the harshest critics. Forget what you thought about MP3's or even RE4's graphics, because this blend of seamless polygons and artistic design stands head and shoulders above them.

Gameplay:

Running and jumpping? Check. Swimming and climbing? Yep. Flying, floating, and ice skating??!! wtf? Yes ladies and gentlemen, the gameplay is both familiar and at the same time new to us Super Mario 64 vets, but will not be difficult at all for any newcomers to pick up the wiimote and get the hang almost immediately. The gravity-bending aspect is the game's most notable new addition, due its frequent, but never tiresome, use throughout the game (i mean you are in space after all...) the camera doesn't bother the player too much either, but there are points where you would like to move it, but aren't allowed to.

Story:

Do I honestly need to say it? You have to save the princess from Bowser (duh) again, but as many times as this has been done, it simply doesn't get old! Anyway, the game starts out with Bowser stealing the Princess's castle, Princess included, away into the sky just as Mario arrives with his invitation letter from her. Won't give away any more than that, but I will say that the story still seems fresh, even if you've played every Mario game ever made before this.

Sound:

One word. Orchestra (did I spell that right?). Quite a few of the songs in this game sound absolutely epic, but I will admit that aa few are somewhat bland. Nevertheless, the moment you have your first boss battle with Bowser...well you see what I mean when the nostalgia sweeps over you. There is some voice acting, but not the weird kind like you hear in Super Mario Sunshine. It's more restrained and used much less painfully. Most of the story is told through text boxes however, but it should'nt bother you too much.

Controls:

The wiimote was definitely desinged to play this kind of game. Simply use the nunchuck analog stick to move around, press A on the wiimote to jump, or shake the wiimote lightly to spin and stun enemies (looks kinda like the mario tornado from melee). All movements and actions are fluid and seamless. The wiimote is very responsive and never lags in response to the players actions. Beginners and veterans alike will become pros at the controls within the first 45 seconds of controlling Mario. Don't think that that makes the game easy though. It starts out steady and ups the difficulty accordingly throughout the flow of the story.

Replay Value:

Much like 64 and Sunshine, there are 120 shiny pointy things, stars in this case, for you to collect. Keep in mind you only need about 60 I think to beat the game. But if you want, keep going for the 120, because there is a VERY nice surprise waiting at the end if you do everything you're supposed to. Won't say much, but I will say this. *MAJOR SPOILER* Anyone remember the BIGGEST rumor ever formed about Super Mario 64 after it came out? Let's just say that Nintendo finally decided to make that rumor, a little less of a rumor...

Overall:

This game is the must have game for the Wii. I'll be honest, the only reason I gave up on a 360 in favor for the Wii was to get SSBB, but now I have another reason to be a proud Wii-owner: Super Mario Galaxy...
