upscaling still doesn't compare to HD and bluray quality

yeah that's true.

I have already over 100 DVD's and i'm not ready to move to HD or Blueray.

What's the point? Doesn't it just make the picture a little bit better or so. I know i might sound a bit ignorant but to me. As long as i can see the picture clear unlike VHS lol Then i'm a happy guy.

if you have a lower resolution tv, yes you might not notice a significant difference between the two. However, with the constant production of bigger and higher resolution tv's (lcd/plasma), to be able to take advantage of the technological benefit these tv's have to offer...you will definitely have to move to blue-ray or hd-dvd. Basically on a 30 inch lcd tv and higher, a normal dvd playback compared to a blu-ray or hd-dvd would be similar to the previous vhs to dvd comparison except with a bigger gap in movie resolution.

I, too have compiled a massive dvd collection (600+) and kinda regretting it with this coming blu-ray/hd-dvd next gen disc.

yeah i have a huge LCD and when i watch DVD's on the 360 it's still normal. i guess if i got a HD mayeb i might notice little differences but at the end of the day. I'm just gonna watch the movie and not sit 5cm away from the TV and spot all the detail. you know what i mean?

but its like buying a console and a whole lot of games only to have a new console come out like 5 years later and the older games are no longer being made so you need to buy a whole new machine and more games, it's always bound to happen

i get you Frodo, not everyone is as picky as others...I, however, fall in to the very picky category.lol. In the end, it's each to their own preference really.

I am not convinced that there ia a difference between the formats in terms of video quality as both HD DVD and Blu Ray can use MPEG-2 and VC-1 HD codecs. The reason I think Blu Ray is better is because it can hold 25GB per side where HD DVD can hold 15 GB. Uncompressed HD Video takes hundreds of Gigabytes, that is why compression codecs must be used for both formats. The extra space on the Blu Ray media could be used for higher bitrate/higher quality video or it could also be used for more extras. Either way the extra capacity surely gives the advantage to Blu Ray.

I am happy to be proved wrong though should someone wish to enlighten me.

well i have both blu ray and Hd and the sound on blu ray is good but i see picture quality is better on HD and the HD is going through component while blu ray is through HDMI

That is fair enough, I appreciate your feedback.

Though I am surprised that the HDMI connected Blue Ray contect looks worse that component connected HD DVD content. What is the make and model of both players? Maybe the difference is in the hardware? I read that early Panasonic and samsung Blue Ray players were awful. I have also read that PS3 is not bad, but also not great.

I am moving into a new bigger house soon and will be buying a new home cinema setup. I will be buying a 1080p display and also be buying a Blu Ray or HD DVD player, so feedback from someone who does have both formats on a 1080p display is greatly appreciated.

Wrong

You may think HD-DVD is better but the fact is there is no difference in picture or sound quality. Theres plenty of articles & news reports to support this I just cant be stuffed googling them to prove it.
