Knightsfan, I really enjoyed this game, even though I just traded it at JB to get Mario Kart Wii.
There is a lot of strategy playing this game as all the horses are very different, but as long as you ride the horse how it wants to run, you should go OK (some horse like to lead, others like to be mid field, while a couple love to run from the back). Managing stamina and speed is tough but ultimately rewarding, especially when you come from behind to win by a nose. I found by riding poor horses well, your reputation grows and trainers are more prepared to offer you better horses
I got rid of it because the goals after the first year aren't as interesting as being the champion apprentice, which is the goal of the first year. But I can recommend this game, but don't pay too much for it!!
juggler - I didn't do much training at all I just asked to ride horses on race day and went from there
