Wii Hardware \ help my wii wont open

BRY3N says:

hey guys.. well i got the wiikey modchip and my friend soldered it in.
I put it all back together it turns on all works fine except the drive.. it wont open, wont read the cd that is in there just says there is no cd,
Have i what they called "briked" it or not put it back together properly.. what does the ribbon on cd drive do?, the bracket which holds it down broke so i had to tape it on it may have come loose.. also with the coin battery that u pull out do u have the positive facing up or down?
if anyone could help me it would be great thanx

Have you checked the connector between the motherboard and the DVD drive?

Check if it's securely in, and in the right pins.. Sometimes people have the issue, it's not clicked in properly and the DVD Drive doesn't work.

BRY3N says:

ive pulled it apart twice and reconnected
i hope ive done it right when u push the eject button u can turn the wii on but it wont eject or read the cd in there.

I don't want to be harsh, but by buying a modchip, you accepted the risk. If it's bricked, there's nothing you can do.

I had this problem with my PS2 . I couldn't fix it, just make sure it is exactly right and if that doesn't work the only thing you can do is buy a new one. Sorry about that, but that is pretty much the only thing you can do.

Boy oh boy, sounds like you've fried the ribbon linking the dvd drive to the motherboard...that would definately explain the drive not reading any dvd's.

Good luck trying to find a replacement...you may find one on ebay...or if you're game, ring up Nintendo and ask how much for a replacement.

That's not very constructive. He's looking for help not a smack on the wrist.

On a similar note though, I'm sure BYR3N, you woulda done a bit of research on the net before you got your chip.

I know for xbox i trawled through several forums before I got my xbox chipped. And the forums were of the modding sort with more experts than a social forum such as this. i.e You'd have better luck finding assistance on a more specialised forum.

i ended up glueing the ribbon with a hot glue gun so now it is stuck there.
I am about to try the idea supa found hopefully it works out fine

yeh tried the trick supa linked me to and still didnt work

phatbass82 says:

how is the condition of the ribbon cable that links the dvd drive to the motherboard (apart from the whole hot glue thing)?

hainaku says:

you should really check the six solder points again. make sure your friend hasn't accidentally "bridged" any tracks on the board. remember that these solder points are very small. check for excess flux that may have flowed to nearby components.

phatbass82 says:

wow...i think the wii won't turn on if the flux over laps the other solder points. That would be the true definition of "bricking"...

Ring Nintendo mate - HAHAHAH

This is a prime example of why you should NOT mod you Wii. Just buy the damn games, this way you know your Wii is gonna keep working

Can we sticky this to the forum under "Why You Should Not Mod Your Wii!"
