All PC's work (consoles as well) by understanding what hardware they have and using drivers accordingly.
If you somehow managed to get a GPU from a PS3 into a Wii it wouldn't recognize the card and would most likely brick itself.
You would need some firmware update to let the Wii know what's going on...and that's not going to happen in this lifetime.

Maybe he meant he installed high-definition output ports like HDMI? Either way, he must be awesome beyond belief, because outputs and disc drives can't change the graphics that are hardcoded in a game. It's like taking Croc on the PSone and trying to play it on an LCD TV, or on a PS2. Nothing changes.
