To be perfectly clear:

Notebook= Book containing notes.
Laptop= Desktop for your lap.

For the price of a good laptop you could build a really good PC that's much quicker and can be upgraded in the future.

For Mac, how do you do work? Does it have word, Powerpoint or Excel? Or is it called something else?

Eons ago, the general term that applied to a portable computer was "laptop", but too many people were frying their jewels, and companies began to replace the term with "notebook".

They have most apps...

As I say, mac > windows

But sadly I find mac too hard to fiddle with, similar to linux, linux you can screw round with to suit your needs... plus half my things dont work with mac, like my webcam, microphone, blah blah.

I use a laptop, the Dell Inspiron 1720, which is a great laptop for the price, since the equivalent Mac would've cost nearly twice as much.

If you don't want to spend $3000+ on a Mac, you can get a good laptop for around $2000.

I have 2 HP laptops (15.4" HP Compaq 6910p and 17" HP Pavilion 9748tx), both are very good and reasonably tough. I throw my laptop bag around quite a bit and both laptops seem to cope very well, I would definitely buy HP again.

MacBooks have built in iSight so that's a moot point...

The equivalent of Office on a Mac is iWork, but for serious users it's a bit 'light' on features.

Okay, for word processing, all Macs come with a 30 day trial of iWork and Office '08 now. iWork is much more integrated, and is much better for presentations. Office, on the other hand is bloated, and only really good for Word, and only for quick type-ups. Since you want to use it for school, where the presentation of the document relly counts, i suggest you use iWork.

Pricing:
iWork is $99. No 'Student Editions' or 'Professional Editions.'
Office 2008 is $184 for the 'Home and Student Edition.'

I was told that the reason for the name change from 'laptop' to 'notebook' is because customers were tending to believe that a 'laptop' should and can be placed on your lap when in use. However because of the placement of the cooling fans on laptops/notebooks, this isnt something you should ever do because you will clog the ventilation and cause overheating. So apparently companies just decided to start rephrasing it as a 'notebook' to avoid the misconception.

Yes, it is possible to get a crappy 13-inch MacBook for $1500. That, however, in no way compares to my 17-inch Dell with all the upgrades, for a mere $1800. (EFY special.)
The Mac equivalent to my laptop is the MacBook Pro and (with upgraded RAM and Hi-Res screen) would cost $4249.

See here: store.apple.com/

Macs are great, just *really* expensive.
