Every character before unlocked has a shaded rectangle behind it.

On the character select screen it looks like there is a shaded rectangle next to the mii outfit but its actually the base of the trophy.

Its much clearer when you choose your characters online and you see there is nothing behing the empty space.

Not everything in life is symetrical.
