I understand what you mean by it being too kiddy. I also have been a hardcore nintendo gamer but then think about resident evil and house of the dead. I think that nintendo are definetly brilliant for all ages. I love it. My younger sister loves it. My 50 year old loves. Hell, my gran even enjoyed watching us play it

I agree. It is niche. The niche is casual/multiplayer/party gaming.
Wii is successful in this niche and focuses here because like you say, it gets outgrunted in other respects.

I still think Wii has more potential if games could use the hardware more efficiently. If the developers step up, Wii games can expand out of this niche a bit and we'll get a bit more out of this console.

RE other people saying "mario is not a kids game."
Tom and Jerry cartoons, Road Runner cartoons. They are kids cartoons. Cute animations. They are also violent, but they are still cute kids shows.

Nintendo have tried to be.. a Jack of all trades if you will, and appeal to all people. The 360 and PS3 barely have any "kiddie" games so when you see all these kid friendly games coming out for the Wii, you think the Wii is too kiddie. Well, did you ever stop to think that the other two consoles aren't kiddie enough?

You said it, sister.

Just because there are kids' games available for a console doesn't mean it's "kiddy". There's a good range of titles available, including Resident Evil etc for the older gamers. I think Nintendo are aiming for the family market - where you need a range to appeal to everyone.

XBox 360 and PS3 are trying to appeal to a narrower market, it seems. I wouldn't buy either console because a) we can't afford multiple consoles, and b) we have a range of ages in our family, so we need a good range of age-appropriate games.

The other thing is, what defines a "kiddy" game vs a "grown-up" game? Does it have to be a hardcore FPS or racing simulator to be considered "grown up"? There are obvious kiddy examples like "Horsez" etc, but what about games like Boomblox or Raving Rabbids? Are they "kiddie" because they're minigames-based, or can they be considered "grown-up" fun too?

Ahhh thank you biinkii! You said the basics of what I was trying to say but couldn't be bothered typing!

Nintendo and all games in general started off so long ago as a means of fun. Ninty have stuck to that whether it be via blasting zombies or making a fool out of yourself with silly mini games. Nintendo will always be about fun. If you can't accept that, and think they're all kiddie games, then you need to grow up Or buy a PS3 aswell....

I think a kiddy game versus one for non-kiddy ... would have to be the intellectual engagement that the game generates for the player verses the player's age.

It would be interesting to get some stats on a list of games and the ages that most of the players are, for a variety of games on a variety of consoles.

That would help make this debate a little more objective.... anyone got some stats?

In my opinion, I do think is abit kiddy, but I don't really find it that bad, since I enjoy em. Just sometimes I miss playing those violent games like GTA 4.

But again think about that, most of the time when people are complaining about this, the myriad of examples that get thrown out are almost exclusively FPS games. Now look at one of Nintendo's biggest franchises, Zelda, compare how mentally engaging that is to the seemingly now deigned mature game yardstick: Call of Duty 4. Which is more mentally engaging? The issues presented in COD4 are more adult of course being a real world game, but the mechanics of it are dead simple, there is no puzzle, there is no HL2/Dues Ex/Bioshock level of intellectual engagement its just a fantastically realised action game where as Zelda is a challenging game for all ages - intellectually.

I think not only is it a case of developers wanting to release their badass FPS on the appropriate console (the one viewed as cool - which no one can argue is the Wii) but also a technical issue. FPS are not like RPG's/Racers/Puzzles blah blah, they are the forefront of what looks f***ing amazing, they are ALWAYS the best looking games because their construction allows them to be (unless theyre like Crysis which almost has a GTA style scope yet graphics that surpass even COD4 and thusly needs a PC with more power than god to run maxed out).

But how do you classify Zack & Wiki
Those graphics and box art would turn me off the game anyday.
However reading Robtots review,(kudos) this changed my mind.
Now this game is challenging and would NOT reccommend this to under 12.

That's the thing about the Wii, Rubiks - I think because of Nintendo's history, there is a tendency to put out games with cartoony characters in them (like Zack & Wiki, Mario, Link etc). But the looks are deceiving because the content can be quite involved. The "hardcore" games like COD4 have the graphic realism to them, but like Skarteh has said, the content doesn't necessarily require lots of intellectual involvement.

Perhaps it's not an adult/kiddy issue but a cultural one. In Japan the supposedly "kiddy" cartoon-style characters are not limited to the kids' market. Adults buy anime/manga/various cartoon literature forms that cover a wide range of topics. Just like the Simpsons weren't supposed to be kids' stuff (they were first aired on adult late-night TV in the US), not all cartoon style games are "kiddy".

When I first looked at consoles (Xbox, PS2, and Gamecube), I had considered the Gamecube, but I was always told that it's more suited to kids. I succumbed and got an Xbox.
When I eventually got a Wii last December, and played my first ever Mario game, I initally thought that it is for kids only. The reason was playing hide-and-seek with rabbits. I mentioned that in another forum place, and got a huge backlash.
Sure, majority of games released on the Xbox and PS consoles are 'M' or 'MA' rated, but there are some that are not. Examples are Viva Pinata, PGR, Forza, Rockstar's Table Tennis, and the upcoming Little Big Planet.
Now, I am glad I got a Wii and enjoying playing titles other than FPSs. Boom Blox, Okami, the Mario games. These look kiddish, but when people do play them, they are not and can be enjoyed by people of all ages.
