Further edit: has apple ditched google maps for Microsoft? Just noticed one of the 3rd party apps was using Virtual Earth. Or is the a developer dependent thing rather than building on existing APIs?

possibly, but you never known, apple product don't usually have price drop after few months of release.

Would just be the API..... but im sure Apple couldnt be too happy with that.. but then again they are trying to cross pollenate now!

To put up a $100 'preorder' that gives no guarantees of actually getting one first round (only priority queing) is a bit misleading i think. And knowing optus, although the cost of the iPhone is relatively cheap compared to other high end phones, We will still get stung by their ridiculously overpriced plans and data usage costs
I take it that buying through optus/voda is the only way to go here in aus (atm) so we are at their whim regarding cost (not apples pricing ) Anyone know if will be able to buy unlocked (outright) overseas.. also the lack of info regarding if telstra is gonna get a license to stock/sell iPhone is buggin me. why wouldn't our biggest and best 3G mobile service provider be in on something as big as this.
is it 'cos they have held back our telecommunication services progression nationally for years leading to apple not liking/trusting them I mean Telstra has copped a spray many times from other international telecommunication companies regarding their failure to get AUS internet standards up to that of the rest of the world.

You're forgetting that the phone companies hide half the phone cost in the monthly contract price. Why else do you get "free" nokias with a 2 year ($1200) phone contract?

I'm hoping there'll be a price drop on the iPods, but I'm not holding my breath...

If you get it on a plan, the full price will be spread out over the course of your contract, so there might be an upfront saving of a couple of hundred dollars. (But you WILL pay the full price in the end)

I'm not sure it will be available on a prepaid plan, yet. But, if the phone companies do make it available, the upfront cost will be greater.

Even now there is stuff u can't do on prepaid that u can on plan...but i think apple was saying it will try to minimize the difference...

buddy your going off advice from some ones opinion that has probably never used one
ive had mine for the past couple of months and can tell you i dont regret a single dollar of the 650 i paid for it ive had nokia smart phones for the past 6 years this is my first non nokia phone ever and i can say that it lives up to the hype and beyond especially once its hacked


Things a windows smart phone cant do that the iphone can and im taking these from one of the latest HTC touch phone my dad recently got

* Multitouch screen
* Accelorometer
* Itunes downlods
* Safari web browser
* iPhysics game best game o nthe iphone to date
* Zillions of crazy iphone apps that ive never seen on SymbianS60 or Windows mobile

cons of the iphone only two that i would say
* mono loudspeaker
* stupid bluetooth restrictions

hacked = original iPhones were locked to US phone carrier. A hack allows you to use it wherever.

sorry mate. when you first get it it will ask you to register it to itunes and if your not with a supported carrier the phone is about as usefull as a papper weight, so if you connect it to the PC and runn Ziphone it will unlock ativate and jailbreak it so even if you have no intention of using it as a phone you can still use it with all the features of an itouch but with a better screen bluetooth and loud speaker
