I've just sold my Wii. To be honest I'm bitterly disappointed with all consoles this generation. To me, all consoles have become obsessed with pushing their technological agendas. For the Wii, this means turning every game into a simplified waggle fest and sacrificing gameplay. For Xbox360 and PS3 it means 5-6 hour drop-dead gorgeous titles with varying degrees of actual gameplay depth.

In my opinion, no company has got the balance between marketing, technology and fun right. I spent more time playing Virtual Console and Gamecube games than I did Wii games. That's not right. Granted each console has a few good games (Zelda, Mario, Metroid, GTAIV, Bioshock etc) but no console is performing particularly well.

I'm going to look into a DS next. From what I've heard and seen there seems to be a good balance there between traditional fun and new stylus control. However, if the DS comes up short for me I think I'll be sitting gaming out for a while.

Thats a good 2c. I agree with all of it and do the exact same thing - play VC and GCN games more than the Wii. The "Waggle fest" thing is also right on the mark and I think the Wii is seriously suffering for it, it should be an option - there needs to be a normal controller. The 360 seems to be closest to the mark because at least they have the online stuff down but as a PC owner the console is completely pointless

I sold my wii and got a 360, and haven't had an issue with the 'depth' of the 360 games that I've played.
bioshock, mass effect, the orange box, burnout paradise, rainbow six: los vegas are all games that have a great & lasting single player.

whilst this may cast me as a 360 fanboy, I don't care, but I had a gamecube last generation, and a wii this generation, both of which left me utterly dissapointed but now that I have a 360, I couldn't be more happier - I've got plenty of games to play (which would be the opposite if I still had my wii), and have plenty more to look foward to, I can't wait to get my hands on GTAIV (still haven't got it yet), fable 2, alan wake, gears of war 2, and banjo kazooie 3. On top of that there is fallout 3, stars wars force unleashed, and too human! I've never been so spoilt for games (except for maybe the days I had a snes or n64).

I don't even have online for my 360 yet, so that's another dimension that I can add to my 360 experience.

so to summarize I my 360. And I'm glad I've made the right console choice (at last).

I remember the Nintendo v Sega days and the Nintendo v Sony days. I think the issue is that most Wii owners don't. It certainly seems like most people here are too young to remember the SNES, or even the N64.

I don't think people who weren't around in those days really understand the complaints that people are beginning to direct at Nintendo. People who didn't play Chrono Trigger, A Link to the Past, Secret of Mana, A Link to the Past et al probably haven't noticed what Nintendo has lost over the years. Likewise, people who have only played Ocarina of Time or Mario 64 with the benefit of hindsight don't understand how utterly charming those games were for people at the time.

It's a difficult thing to quantify, but something has changed since Nintendo began actively competing in the videogame market. After the PSX became the 'cool' console, Nintendo tried too hard to be completely different. The Gamecube suffered as a result of Nintendo trying to differentiate itself, but not going far enough. I think the Wii has failed (although certainly not in a commercial sense) because Nintendo has gone too far.

I can't help but feel the company has sold out my childhood a little bit with the Wii. That spark that made Nintendo games special is well and truly gone. Even the classics like Mario and Zelda have been watered down to suit non-gamers. I don't know if it's really happening or if it's just nostalgia, but it certainly feels like the magic has died.

I think it's a mixture of you growing up in the last 10-12 years, Nintendo over-hyping and underdelievering with their games, and the fact that Nintendo are aiming for mass appeal now, and thus simplifying their games ad nauseam.

BUT I still think Nintendo games retain their magic, how can you not be charmed by mario galaxy? The only problem I have with Nintendo games at the moment is that their just not pushing the envelope like other developers on the ps3/360 are, or like they used to in the SNES and N64 days.

Do you all remember when the Wii was released? The biggest problem facing owners of the cute little white box was a total lack of games. The reason for this as far as I can see was the Wii being so different from anything the public had seen before that I think software companies were taken completely by surprise.

The world watched stunned at the rate the units sold. People were so impressed with even basic motion sensing that demand soon far outstripped supply. Software companies could obviously see the popularity in terms of profit. Thus began the mass migration of PS2 ports to Wii by third party developers. A practice that has left the Wii stigmatised. The console itself is not a "step back" but sadly most third party software for it is.

Yep, I also remember the days before. Before Sony was a gaming name, before Sega tried to conquer the home console market. In the good old days I had the Atari plugged into my TV and then the Commodore 64 became the gaming machine (er, I mean personal computer) of choice.

Those were the days... If they would only let the C64 loose on the VC outside of Europe I'd be a very happy camper.

That makes you how old? What does this have to with the Wii being a "step back"? You seem to have a thing for perfect grammar? Why not expand that anal-retentive approach to "Netiquette".

I keep trying. It's harder then one might expect though. Here's something that you "old ones" keep saying but haven't pointed out. VC games DO show a step forward in gaming by allowing people to play retro games thus letting them live out "the good old days". Something Nintendo took into account that no other console (legitimately) did.

That's why I keep banging on about it (the VC). I totally agree that catering for the broader audience is a step forward but if other people don't see it then it's their loss. Whether Wii is step forward, backwards or left or right for that matter means little to me as long as I can have fun.

I own 2 of the current 3 and love them both but not nearly as much as my DS.

Actually, you have also violated netiquette and so have most of the people in this thread! The original topic was that the CEO of Epic said he would not produce games for the Wii. It has (as usual) degenerated into a console vs consols vs console war. Hmmmm, now how many threads have I seen that happen in?
In any case, if I may comment on the topic at hand. While I am disappointed to see a publisher spurn the wii as I do love the machine, I have to say that it is a breath of fresh air to see a company that is not driven by potential profits and instead sticking to a principal. Whether or not the principal is right or wrong is beside the point for me. What kind of world would it be if every corporation thought about what they believed in rather than how much money they can make?
Having said that, I do believe it will become an untennable position for Epic in the long run and I can see them back-flipping at some point.

Ahhh I had a mighty C64 too dossaer it was a stallion of a machine!

I think maybe the reason the VC service is a better offering than the other 2 competitors is maybe because Nintendo actually has quite a long history games wise, they were there back in the day and it seems Sega and Nintendo have a better relationship for it so Nintendo has both the titans from the mid eighties.

I do agree that Nintendo are trying too hard to be different. Innovation is one thing, but the reason certain conventions are used by everyone is probably because thats what the public wants. People may argue that the Wii is what the public wants as it sells the most but really, does the Wii sell the most or does Wii Sports sell it the most. Think about it... who didn't buy their Wii after playing Wii Sports?

They prob wouldn't backflip.. Epic by making that statement tells us he is targeting experienced gamers (i.e. people who played games for probably at least 2-3 years...) For the last 10 years, most of the game studios games are targeted at this group of people, and there are enough experienced gamers for them to make a profit.. Wii isn't about the fourth generation console. Game studios can still make a buck developing 4th gen games, so Epic can do what it likes best and still make tons of money.

Wii is more like generation 0, it's a revolution in the sense and this console really doesn't fit well with most game studios because they are all about 4th gen development these days.. With their massive resources it's harder for them to actually "step back" and develop for the Wii..

Wii is for people with 0 year console gaming experience. 360 and PS3 is about people who grew up with the PS2 and xbox..

People who buy the Wii may well buy a PS3 or Xbox a few months down the road.. These people will prob never buy a PS3 or 360 in the first place.. So all in all, stop fighting, it's all good for the industry.
