Microsoft and Toshiba aren't in bed with each other like so many people think. They never were and never will be. If direct downloads is run, it'll be Microsoft on its own...

I wouldn't say they are in bed, more like they are collaborating with each other.

Toshiba has some patents with regards to compression and DRM. They are also concentrating on NAND technologies now. They may also use the Cell chips for this purpose (yup.. the very same Cell chip that powers PS3 is soon to be manufactured by Toshiba).

Toshiba has all the hardware to do direct downloads, all it needs is Microsoft to come up with the software (and XBOX) to make this happen.

Hardware to do direct downloads? Wha? Microsoft already has the service up and running in the US and other parts of the world without Toshiba. Also, direct downloads via the internet would have to come through Windows (as one possibility) so therefore it could work on any PC running windows.
