honestly i dont care, im 14, it doesnt matter how much more detailed my dvds can be. as long as i get to see Angelina Jolie being a hot assassin (or whatever) im pleased. tell me, does the name and company of an upgrade really matter?

You all have to remember that to notice the difference you need the hardware. The bulk of the consumer market won't even have the hardware capable of noticing the difference. My parents still use a 48cm CRT TV and are perfectly happy with it. Lots of people are this way, not everyone wants to brag about having the best of everything.

And to be honest there aren't too many movies on blu-ray so far I even want... Like Vertikal said, its just not the niche of movies that entertain me. Hollywood stuff like Transformers I watched at the movies but I would never buy. Its a hollow blingy movie that left no impression on me at all, just killed time. Most things from Hollywood are just the same, entertaining but ultimately meaningless.

Not too concerned.

My new house has an indoor swimming pool. That's far more entertaining to me than movies now.

Toshiba themselves announced it in an interview: www.reuters.com/ with NHK which is come big fancy Japanese company. The official press release will probably follow shortly.

You're still leaving out all the details, its not been made official by Toshiba yet, its an 'unnamed source close to the company'. While its safe to say that yes it is official, nothing 'official' has actually been said. Unless the source is Toshiba's press centre, then it can't actually be official.

Im glad Blu-Ray won, its a superior format in that the capacity of the discs well exceeds that of HD-DVD. As for interactivity etc... ive got gaming for that. But frankly if I have the choice of backing up 50gb in one hit or 20gb im takin the 50gb...

Im just glad HD-DVD didnt win... it was a half way go between attempt at an upgrade. Honestly they may as well of slapped two dvds together with glue to achive what they did. Blu-Ray has capacity and in todays world Size DOES MATTER!

Actually HD-DVD and Blu ray have the same quality in terms of audio/visual, yes BR is higher density than HD-DVD, HD-DVD was clearly infront in terms of technology of players and universal format.

The SPEC for BR was as lose as can be, and those early adopters aren't even compatible with the latest discs without a required firmware/profile upgrade. Where as all HD-DVD players work with every HD-DVD disc, the spec was a lot tighter and a lot better planned out.

Also for what you said about capacity doesn't relate to this actual format war, BR won based on studio support, as I don't see much of the war being fought out over how much data you can backup onto a disc (even thought it does matter).

The sad thing about it all is that BR won, but its more expensive all round than HD-DVD, and we all know what sony are like when it comes to price points, this now means we're go

This stupid blue vs red has been going long enough. I fail to see any significance who wins or loses. At the end of the day, the DVD sales is still A LOT bigger than HD sales.

Personally I prefer HD DVD, inferior bit rates and so on, I prefer something that's well spec'd than something that's always moving forward.

But still, until my local video store has tons of HD movies for me to rent at a cheap price, I'm still sticking to my DVD player.

How misinformed you are. HD-DVD creators finalized the 51gig HD-DVD months ago and was ready to go and fully approved by the DVD Forum. Whats your argument now?

Google isn't big enough to show my nether regions mate..

Personally I don't care who wins as long as one does and it becomes standard. I'm not the visual/audio-phile I once was. A crap movie is still crap no matter how good it looks.

About time Sony won something though. They've had a rough trot since the Betamax war.

HD DVD may have lost.. But in reality Blu-ray may die also if Sony don't sort out the various profiles quickly... The backward incompatibilities will no doubt generate alot more negativity and blacklash - turning 99.999% of the consumers away from HD..

And having Sony control your media format is a very very bad thing. They are a movie studio with a very bad track record (remember the CD rootkit thing)?

Edit: Well.. Seems official. HD DVD is now dead. Even Toshiba japan website is down.

I never got a HD-DVD Player or a Blu-Ray Player, so it really doesn't bother me. I'll just get a Blu-Ray Player when I can afford it now. At least I now know mine won't fail and fall behind (for a bit anyway).

Wasnt this 51gig disc a triple layer where the blu-ray 50gig is a double layer, so blu-ray could go way beyond 51gig if they developed a triple or above disc ?

Havent got a 1080p tv... So normal dvd is fine by me.

If blue ray becomes cheap (70 dollar taiwanese players) and actually becomes the norm (highly not likely) I might reconsider my stance but as of now, its comparable to unleaded petrol and premium unleaded petrol.

I've got blue ray/sony 1080p tv (connected via HDMI for optimal picture quality), but normal dvd is still fine by me. Honestly the difference isn't all that great. Maybe if you have a nice projector projecting 100" image, it may make a more significant difference.

Who gives an arse quite frankly.
With the endless number of sequels, remakes, trilogies, comic book adaptations, video game adaptations (good lord), and other unoriginal effluent that the film industry sees fit to deflate our brains with these days, I think it hardly matters a toss whether you're able to see the fine downy hairs in Jessica Alba's cleavage or not.

I think Blu-Ray looks loads better then DVD. If you get a good quality Blu-Ray movie that the studios did a good job with, it will blow a upscaled dvd out of the water.
