Can get most movies for like $10... DVD quality is fine with me.

People used to say the same thing about Video Cassettes.

only difference it this time they're right

Sit down & watch Planet Earth on blu-ray then watch it on DVD & tell me theres no difference. Personally I can understand people not wanting to go HD yet, the only reason I did was because I already got the PS3 & I wanted a new TV & there was some good deals going on for full HD tv's, but it will be natural progression in the next 5 years, DVD's will eventually be taken over by blu-ray.

yes there's a difference but I don't think we're ready to move on yet

Never claimed there was no difference, just that there wasn't enough. The gap between Cassette and DVD I believe is bigger, not just quality wise but its a totally different format, you can skip, resume blah blah without having to rewind or stop. Its non-linear system. THATS a massive difference. Now tell me HD is THAT much better than a vanilla DVD?

Its not THAT much different when it comes to the options of being able to skip, resume blah blah. BUT with a full HD TV & a decent audio setup you will SEE & HEAR the difference.

I also have no intentions of buying blu-rays copies of DVD's I already have as I can upscale them on the PS3 but for new movies & wicked documentaries like Planet Earth, blu-ray does look fantastic.

Isnt the case for Blu-Ray a different shape top to normal dvds so they wont fit in a standard DVD cabinet properly? If so, that'll put me off Blu-Ray immediatly.

Im not sure Foetoid, the cases are the same as the PS3 game cases, they are a little shorter than a DVD case but about the same width. I dont actually have a proper DVD cabinet, I have a cabinet that was made by a friend so it can be customized.

I'm in the 'there's no real advantage' camp. The biggest thing that DVD brought in was chaptering, that was something truly needed for movies. But HD movies are just PR and marketing IMO. It's like buying a 10 megapixel camera, the vast majority of consumers never do anything with their photos that requires them to be 10MP, and all they end up with is huge attachments in their email when they send them to friends.

They should've thought of a better name than HD-DVD, it still sounds old and DVD like... unlike Blu-Ray. So yes, I'm glad blu-ray won... I was planning on getting a ps3 as well

You can tell the difference between the two but I have no problem with DVDs. I just don't think people are going to change until they feel "forced" just like when VHS was outdated and DVDs came in. People gradually made the switch when they felt it was necessary and I think that will eventually happen with blu-ray but it will take time.

The problem with HD-DVD is that it doesnt have the storage capacity that Blue-Ray does therefore the movie companies will favour this format over HD-DVD because they can fit extra content eg games internet content, interviews etc

Well at least SONY has finally won a format war after many years of losing with the likes of Betamax and Mini-Discs. Many argued that Betamax was superior to VHS, and that Mini-Discs' sound quality was the best at the time - but they still couldn't get over the line. They tried again with the release of UMDs (for the PSP) but that also failed. Nobody is releasing any more movies on UMD.

It seems quite ironic now that Blu-Ray won over HD-DVD, when clearly both formats are comparable and not one has a huge advantage over the other.

Not really ironic at all. It was ironic previously that Sony failed to win with multiple superior formats. Betamax was far better than VHS, but the Porn industry was the big new thing at the time (being able to watch it at home omg) and they backed VHS for being cheaper to produce on. That alone won the war. UMD was never going to do well, people dont want multiple disk formats for movies, hence HD-DVD failing.

i think it was ironic in that Betamax and Mini-Disc were superior formats at the time but failed, but now Blu-Ray wins over HD-DVD which is an excellent challenger and in some aspects, arguably more superior.

yes i agree with you though, sadly, that price always wins in the end, no matter how superior the product may be (PS3?).

I think it'll take years for standard dvd to be wiped out, as there are people like me who prefer indie films over the hollywood slush blu-ray has out. Some of the obscure films i've imported from strange countries will never see the light of day on blu-ray, because the quality of some of those films will not benefit in slightest from blu-ray.

I think dvd and blu-ray will co-exist for a very very long time. Film collectors like myself will not be able to replace all of our obscure film with blu-ray, so i think it'll be like wii vs ps3. Mainstream, low-income families will stick to dvd with their sd tv's because it's affordable, will always be a better variety of films available much like the wii is the cheap gaming console of variety that can be used on normal tvs and that's affordable vs the ps3 which is suited to hd tv's and lacks the variety of titles that older gent like I prefer.

PS3 = big budget hollywood style games (style and graphics over creativity)
Blu Ray = big budget hollywood movies (style and graphics over creative independent films)

Wii = small budget indie style games (creativity over graphics and style)
DVD = small, obscure, indie films (that are creative over big-budget hollywood substanceless films)

I think the two need to exist much like we need indie film as well as big dumb hollywood films... we need both, otherwise all films would be big and dumb... VARIETY, just like Wii.

Amen to that. Over the weekend i watched the Omega Man, a couple of Hitchc0ck classics, and some Asian films that i got from Madman. I certainly don't think they'd be re-released on Blu-Ray. DVD would be around for quite a while yet.

I agree...

Im glad Blu-Ray won, its a superior format in that the capacity of the discs well exceeds that of HD-DVD. As for interactivity etc... ive got gaming for that. But frankly if I have the choice of backing up 50gb in one hit or 20gb im takin the 50gb...

As for Blu-Ray (HD) quality over DVD... Blu-Ray wins hands down and mops the deck with DVD. I run a 140" screen in 1080 and I can tell you right now no matter how good of a upscaler you use you wont get a clear sharp image like that of HD content. In saying this I still buy DVDs for movies im keen to see, but for personal favorites I will always buy the HD version. I have 3 copies of Fifth Element, one on Standard DVD another is SuperBit DVD and my latest copy of it is on BluRay and the difference is overwhelming. Dont be fooled into thinkin DVD quality is fine because its better than VHS. Bluray is to DVD as DVD was to VHS.

In sayin this DVD will be around for a long time yet... because Bluray players will play DVD format. And not everyone can afford to replace and upgrade etc.

Im just glad HD-DVD didnt win... it was a half way go between attempt at an upgrade. Honestly they may as well of slapped two dvds together with glue to achive what they did. Blu-Ray has capacity and in todays world Size DOES MATTER!
