News \ No budget range for Wii...for now

After a recent interview with MCV, a UK Nintendo spokesperson claimed that Nintendo have "...no plans for a Wii budget label. Nintendo Wii software is performing very well at its current price points."

While it is still early in the Wii's life, one would say that this is rather discouraging news considering the high sales of Wii consoles and software.

Thanks to MCV for the info.

I never like the "Platinum" range. It's like saying look at me, i'm "Cheap"! Not good for collecting in the long run, from my past experience...

yes, SOME of the games are about $45. but what about the great games like Zelda and Strikers. these still retail for at least $80..

What are you talking about?
Some Wii games are only forty five dollars and they're not platnum or the equivalent. What would constitute a platnum Wii title?
A twenty dollar game?

this was one of the main factors in my not buying a Wii quite yet, I think every console needs a platinum range or equivalent

I guess with VC titles, and the ability to play GC games too, and the relatively recent release of the Wii, I guess NIntendo just reckonds that they're doing fine the way they are and can afford not to lower the price on popular games precisely for that reason - they are still popular and people are buying them at the higher price. Sure, more people will probably buy them if they released them at a budget price, but they are not saying they won't do that in the future anyway...

the prices will fall on their own with the proliferation of price wars between retailers, the wii is cheap enough as it is. And I would personally prefer to see a possible superior version of the wii in the future with new features (e.g. expanded memory, improved hardware, multimedia capabilities etc).

I'm not overly surprised by this. Considering first party Wii titles are meant to be priced at $80, and the Wii hasn't even been around for a year yet, and how well it is doing at the current prices, why would they introduce a 'budget title' range now?

Now, this is only for first party titles, as the original article states. There's nothing stopping non first party developers from dropping their prices.

My memory sucks :P but there were some games to be released by a company called Popcorn(?, sucky memory) that will be coming out for a rrp of $49.95. I think Ninjabread man was one of them(?) The label was to release up to 30 games for the Wii, all at this low price?

Ahhh, hang on, I'll find the article. :P

*EDIT* Woo hoo! My memory kinda worked!
