News \ WiiWare titles announced

Following Nintendo’s Fall Press Conference of 2007 yesterday, details some of the titles that we’ll be seeing on the Wii’s new WiiWare channel are starting to emerge. Some of these aren’t just hacked together worthless games either. Looks like we’ll be seeing some quality coming out of this new channel. I thought I’d put them all together here, for you to soak in.

Final Fantasy Chrystal Chronicles - A brand new FF title from Square Enix titled FFCC: Chiisa na Ousama to Yakusoku no Kuni (The Young King and the Promised Land). This game is said to take place after FF: Crystal Chronicles. The story tells of this young King using the power of the crystals to rebuild his kingdom after he lost it from the events in the first game. It is said to be a “Country Building RPG“.
There is an official site to keep your eyes on, if you can read Japanese that is: www.square-enix.co.jp/ This game will be released alongside WiiWare’s debut in Japan in the Spring of 2008, selling for the small price of 1500 Wii points.

Pokemon Bokujou (ranch) - Transfer your little pokemon critters from your DS Pokemon Diamond and/or Pearl to your Wii and raise and manage them in a farm style environment. It is said that you will able to bring your created Miis to the ranch and do sweet little things like taking pictures of them, which you will be able to send to your friends’ Wiis. Sounds like hours of fun with the evil little monsters..

Dr. Mario - The old classic that originated on the NES is back with a revamp, Wii style! Not only will you be killing those little germs solo, but you will also be able to compete against friends from around the world via Wi-fi. Miis will also be usable in this classic as you can replace the Mario characters with your own Mii so it can watch you exterminate! The game will also include Saikin Bokumetsu (translates as “Bacteria Extermination”) which is a game from Brain Age 2 and can now be played with up to four players.

Okiraku Ping Pong - Use your Wiimote to control your on screen paddle in this original title from Arc System Works. Depending on how you swing the controller you’ll be able to pull off top spins, back spins, smashes and other shots. Chose from automatic mode where you just have to aim and swing the Wiimote, or manual for a full on ping pong experience!

Bomberman and Star Soldier R - Both titles from Hudson, and both new entries into their established series. Not much details on either as yet, but screenshots of SSR “show a 3D vertical shooter with big explosions and lots of targets” OOO!

Joy Sound - Also from Hudson, this is pretty much a karaoke simulator(?!) Featuring, among other things, mini games and “periodically updated music downloads”. Hudson will also release a USB microphone to scream all your tunes into. There is also talk that they will release a package including the microphone aswell as a disk that gives you access to extra tunes, and some more little games.

Mojipittan - Bandai Namco's word puzzle game that has been released on the DS and PSP.

Maruboushikaku - [quoted from IGN] A puzzle game themed in three patterns: maru (circle), bou (line) and shikaku (square). The game displays three game windows simultaneously, each focusing on one of these patterns. Your actions in one window have effects in the other windows, which should make for a blast when playing in three player mode.

Minna de Puzzloop - [quoted from IGN] (Puzzloop with Everyone) This is a Wii version of the game that was released in America as Magnetica. You use the Wii mote for direct control. The game supports up to four players for cooperative and competitive play.


Now, this is only the beginning of what we’ll be able to download onto our Wii’s decreasing memory. A quote from Nintendo’s president Satoru Iwata gives us an inkling of how much interest this channel is generating from developers.

"We've already received proposals for over 100 titles from software development companies. We've made a platform for developing software at low cost, and would like to offer a new business chance based around a battle of ideas."

All I can say is that I hope this trend of interesting little games doesn’t decline, and we see some great titles coming from developers large and small. The more titles to come from this, the more pressure will be put on Nintendo to develop something for us to store it all on!
