Miyamoto: Nintendo will move with technology

Miyamoto: Nintendo will move with technology

Shigeru Miyamoto at an event roundtable in New York yesterday informed the other attendees that he wants Nintendo to take advantage of technology as it comes along. The Wii may not currently support HD graphics, but Miyamoto believes that in the future Nintendo will be in step with technology updates.

When asked what he felt about HD graphics, Miyamoto's reply was as follows,

Miyamoto said: "I don't think there's anything wrong with pretty graphics, and if I'm a consumer that has an HDTV, I'd want to be able to play my games with nice graphics too. And I think as we've seen the penetration rates for HDTV increase, we're going to see video games and Nintendo's games move along in step with the progression of technology."

Miyamoto continued; "But what I don't think is necessarily true is that the graphics itself is something that's going to make the gameplay experience better. So we're still going to focus on the gameplay, but we'll take advantage of the technology as it comes out."

No. HD graphics doesn't mean "realistic graphics". It just means that you can view the graphics at a higher resolution, so Mario will still look exactly the same.

Of course they want money. They're a business, and the business of business is to make money, and the more money you make the better you are at business. However, it isn't as though Nintendo is desperate for cash, as they've made a fortune off Wii already (and in stark contrast the the billions Sony, and to a lesser extent Microsoft, have lost from PS3 and 360 respectively). Further, releasing an HD Wii isn't just a for-cash thing on Nintendo's part, but simultaneously a matter of answering the demands of customers that have often complained about the lack of HD output from the console since even before launch.

i dont think current games will look much different because developers didn't initially allow for higher resolution graphic maps, in fact they most likely would have optimized it to death to make it run faster etc, it will be the next lot of games that we will start to see an improvment on i think. i wouldn't be surprised if we saw re-releases in HD, Super Mario Galaxy HD hear we come!!
