Nintendo Power Miyamoto interview
Today issue 244 of nintendo power was mailed to faithful subscribers of nintendo power. In it contained an interview with miyamoto.here's what they had to say.
NP:With all the announcements that we've heard at this E3 you seem like a very busy man right now. What are you spending most of your time on these days?
SM:We just finished wii sports resort,so right now New super mario bros. Wii is taking up most of my time.
NP:What's your role on that game?
SM:Supervisor. Obviously,I'm looking at a wide variety of things, but making sure that mario's basic controls, that functionality, works well. That's my job to bring that all together.
NP:Which team is developing that game?
SM:The same team that did Super Mario Advance and DS New Super Mario Bros.-the same team through all of those. Mr. [Takashi] Tezuka and Mr. [Toshihiko] Nakago are part of that group. Mr. Nakago isn't one of those people that comes out to the front, but Mr. Tezuka is the main one.
NP:What appeals to you about a multiplayer Mario game?
SM:First of all,you know, when it comes to multiplayer there's a lot of competitive multiplayer games. New Super Mario Bros. Wii is an expierience that players will play together. Of course,we had the assist mode in Super Mario Galaxy that allowed 2 players to work together, but there's no 4 player Mario game in the same space until now. Traditionally with Mario games, when you fall off the level or you lose a life you go back to the beginning of the level, but with this game, because we have 4 people-or you can have up to 4 people-as long as one charachter is still alive and well, then you get to start back at the point where you were knocked off or where you ran into an enemy, and it's really exciting to have that sort of cooperative notion and everyone working together torward that goal. Of course, there's also a variety of gameplay styles. You can do very competitive gameplay where you're just getting in each other's way, pushing each other into harm's way, trying to see who can get the high score-game has a wide variety of gameplay styles avalible that are inherent within the system.
NP:You've mentioned that you tried some multiplayer experiments with Mario in the past but ultimately gave up on them. Could you give us some examples of those expieriences?
SM: One thing that didn't make it is that in Super Mario 64 we tried doing split-screen multiplayer with 2 players, but we ended up not adopting that.
NP:How are the levels in New Super Mario Bros. designed for multiplayer gameplay?
SM:we reallydidn't think about designing the courses or levels for multiplayer. They're just designed for that single-player expierience. but it's just fun to have more people playing together. We really didn't go out of our way to build anything specifically for multiplayer.I think the thing that we really had to focus on was kind of the opposite-we had a single-player mode, and all we had to do was make sure that within this level that it could be played with more. So we couldn't create anything that wouldn't allow us to put more than 1 charachter in there, and that was kind of tough. We've got that [auto-scrolling moving platform]-if you make that the normal size,of course, you can't get all 4 players on it; if you make it too big it's too easy.So looking at that, that's 1 of those things that we had to work on specifically because we have introduced the multiplayer.
NP: Will there be other playable charachters other than Mario,Luigi, and the toads?
SM:That's it.
NP:The boss I fought-that was Morton Koopa Jr.,one of the Koopa kids right? Are all of the Koopa kids in the game?
SM: They're supposed to all be in there, yeah. We're still working on it!
