Free Radical was originally founded in 1999 by several former Rare employees. With the recent announcement that they had laid off as many as 140 employees, many gamers were saddened that this great developer had closed its doors and some of its greatest franchises will cease to exist. However, in February of 2009, Managing Director Avni Yerli of Germany based Crytek (Far Cry, Crisis) was estatic to announce the acquisition of Free Radical Design (TimeSplitters, Haze), of which the latter will now fly the flag of Crytek UK.
