Honestly I thought something like this would be used as an attachment for the original classic controller. It seems they added that clip at the back for nothing.

I guess Nintendo saw an opportunity to make some more money.

Well, the original Classic Controller was just a SNES controller with analog sticks added. The original PSX controller was just a SNES controller with the buttons renamed and the addition of the grips, and Sony later added analog sticks (just as Nintendo did for the Classic Controller) in exactly the same fashion for their Dual Analog controller (precursor to the DualShock). So, both the Classic Controller Pro and Sony's entire line of PlayStation controllers all evolved from the SNES controller, hence the similarities and similar evolution.

It would make more sense if this replaced the current classic controller, not be sold along side it. If they wanted to sell it as a second option as a classic controller they should have made it more N64 friendly by swapping the left joystick and the D-pad. Of course that would basically be the 360 controller, but that is basically the gamecube controller so it's all even in the end.
