Wii News \ Licensing Issues Might Stop Earthbound Ever Coming to Wii

Licensing Issues May Mean Earthbound will Never Come to Wii

The rumour mill suggests that a licensing issue may plague Earthbound, as the classic title may not be allowed to be released on the Nintendo Wii's virtual console. At this stage it's important to note this is nothing more than a rumour, don't go smashing your Wii just yet, after all apparently the game has been rated for a VC release by the ESRB.

The issue comes down to the games soundtrack license. The game contains several songs that are extremely similar to actual songs, you can check out a list of comparisons here. The similarities are a serious issue for Nintendo if they intend to release the title to western audiences. Nintendo of American wished to make changes to the game to avoid the issue, but for an unknown reason the head honchos back in Japan will not allow them to do so.

It appears that the ESRB rating mentioned above was a mistake, and that it should never have been released to the public. As it currently stands the game sits on the fence, the changes should be easy enough to make, although surely there must be a reason behind NoA not being allowed to do so. We'll keep you posted.
