News \ Nintendo Puts A Stop To Wii DVD For The Moment

The Nintendo Wii's DVD system has been put to a stop at the current moment. At a recent stock holder meeting, the companies president stated that,

"With supply constraints [of the Wii] continuing worldwide, the priority is on the current model"

Nintendo have previously mentioned this before, and were hoping to release it some time in this year.

Also at the same stock holder meeting, Nintendo showed their plans for a new DS's 1seg tuner, possibly in this July. This device allows Japanese users to be able to view digital television programs straight from their Nintendo DS.

let Nintendo concentrate on cool new thins for the Wii game wise, and forget about DVD playback. For crying out loud who really cares if the Wii can't play DVD's? Considering the that the Wii only does 480p anyway, I'm sure most people will be playing their DVD's or videos from something else.

The Wii is cheap compared to other consoles as it only concentrates on playing games. The development costs are alot lower than what XBOX and PS3 are, and they dont have pay for codecs etc.

Wow, you really are clueless. Of COURSE a PS2 disc wouldn't work in a DVD Player because DVD Players don't have file systems, duh. You can however, put a PS2 disc in a computer's DVD drive and voila, files show up! Same with XBOX games (and I think 360), because they actually use DVD-ROM. My point is Wii/GC Discs are not DVD-ROMs!

You were right about it being the same capacity. I was speaking from my knowledge of the Gamecube discs. But it's still a different format and is not the same as a DVD.

EDIT: tryed it myself to verify my claim. It doesn't read it and it makes the drive make funny noises as it struggles in vain to read it!
