Apple Developing a 3D Gaming Controller

AppleInsider have discovered a new Patent filing which shows that Apple are currently researching a 3D Remote control system that will be used with its Apple TV set top Box, which would be very similar to the Wii's controller functionality, and also would enable users to interact with screen objects, much the same way that Apple's Multi touch technology works.

Although Apple is not known for its gaming devices, Next month will see the release of V2.0 firmware for the iPhone which among other things will see the release of third party apps, including games that can take advantage of the iPhone's accelerometer.

That will leave only the Apple TV as the only Apple Platform that does not have the ability to play games (ipods can already play basic "Casual Games"). So it seems only fitting that Apple will seek to release this genre of gaming across the board.

PopCap games have even hinted at the fact that they are already working on developing games for the Apple TV.

Code was also discovered in iTunes 7.1 that directly discussed the syncing of games to the Apple TV.

Only time will tell where Apple head with this Patent. As with all filings from Apple, nothing is set in Concrete until Steve gets up in his black long sleeve top and holds the item in his hands for display to the world. But at this point in time I don't think Nintendo, Sony, or Microsoft have much to worry about with this development.
