Speaking with the LA Times,, POTC director Gore Verbinski has stated that he is developing a new game that he says will counter what is a “broken model” of game development.
Verbinski said, "I've got something in mind that I've had for about a year. I didn't want to jump into gaming from the executive level. I really want to sort of engage on a creative level."
Verbinski didn’t reveal anything about what kind of game he actually has in mind, but he did mention that he wants to create a game in 'anti-narrative'. Our guess is that he wants more focus on gamer interactivity and gameplay rather then story. So in other words, Verbinski is anti-Japanese-made games.
The director went on to praise Beautiful Katamari for not having a central character, which according to him broke all sorts of rules.
While there are plenty of games throughout history without a main character, we suppose he is referring more so to current generation games, which seem to take the more cinematic approach then ever before.
He then went on to talk about what he would have done with a POTC game. If this doesn’t make you POTC fans depressed after some lacklustre licensed games, then you’re not really a POTC fan.
Verbinski said, "A MMOG [massively multiplayer online game] where you can dress up as a pirate. You can have a social network where you meet other pirates, and maybe three days in, you meet Jack Sparrow. Maybe you have to sell your soul to the devil to get to this level or that."
Oh, what could have been…
