News \ Wii Bundles Frowned Upon by Nintendo

Retailers selling unofficial Wii bundles for inflated prices has caused Nintendo to make its displeasure known.

A Wii console on its own sells for US$250, cheaper than the PS3 or XBox360, however some retailers have offered bundles including consoles, extra accessories and/or games for prices higher than recommended retail.

Reggie Fils-Aime president of Nintendo of America stated "Retailers have already been given feedback that we are not big fans of that. We think it masks some of the price advantage we have versus our competition and, frankly, the consumer should decide what they want".

With Nintendo Wii and DS Lite being the hottest holiday wish list items this year, Nintendo is in an enviable position.

Fils-Aime denied reports that Nintendo had threatened to restrict supply to those retailers who were involved with the bundle offers, but remarked "We don't have to remind retailers of the strength we have right now. We are simply making an observation and that reinforces our point quite nicely with retailers."

Nintendo has already had to contend with huge consumer demand for both the DS Lite portable console as well as the Wii.

Consumer demand continues to outstrip production. This shortage is causing headaches for Nintendo, who are having trouble with future business planning.

Difficulties are arising with plans for the production and release of upcoming titles such as WiiFit and Wii Boards.
"We at Nintendo America are focused on getting to the point when any consumer can walk into any of our retailers and find a Wii. Then we can plan, on an ongoing basis, the rest of the business." Fils-Aime said.

I think it's a ploy for Nintendo to make more money. Yes, the bundles cost more, but think about it, you are saving money on the accessories or whatever that is bundled with the console, compared to purchasing it by itself!

I'd much rather purchase the Wii for $50 more if I knew it came with an extra game and Wiimote. Now that's value for money!
