It’s great to see more girls signing up to this site lately, and I thought maybe you could all gather in a girly huddle and I could pick your brains!
Why do you think there are so few girls out there that enjoy games as we do? Why are we so different?
And hey, if the Wii is your first console, what made you want to buy one? What was turning you off games before?

Me? I started when my Dad brought home an Atari 2600
I'm not sure whether I started playing it because I looked up to my dad, or because it looked like so much fun! Both probably. I always liked puzzles as a kid, and trying to figure things out, I think that’s how I look at games. They’re simply a puzzle or riddle that needs to be solved.

Hi folks!

Just to fill you in this will be our official girl gamers discussion thread, both a place for girl gamers to talk to other girl gamers, and also a general discussion about the topic.

Our very own Omi and Magickstar will be the on going moderators of the thread so please give them the same respect as any of the admin

Enjoy!

Hey.. Go girl power. Bring on more gamer girls. Luckily for me my wife will play the odd game with me.

She got me a 2nd guitar for GH3 for x-mas so we get to jam out together.

Congrats Omi on your new found fame.

The whole demographic is a really interesting thing. I think a lot of it is to do with an overall perception of the gaming industry, that it's a kind of 'boys club'
There was a girl who I was seeing for a while who is a fairly big gamer so being a good friend I put her down in front of Half Life Episode 2 and Portal, which she both loved. What really amazed me though was one day I got this semi-frantic phone call. She had just played them through a second time with the in game commentaries on and had pretty much been blown away when she heard women on the commentaries talking about design and game engine things. It was like up until then she'd never seen games as something women could be involved in on a decision making level, which is what blew me away.

Anyhow since then she's becoming a ninja at Hammer, Valve's level editor and is producing some really amazing well balanced stuff.

It's just very interesting to see the perceptions of the industry from different angles

Hey!
I'm signing up for the Girl Gamers thread!
Mind you i know the guys will also chatter about here, which is ok by me!

I've had quite a few games consoles run through the family over my life. Most deffinatly started out on a sega. My sister and i over time were given the Super Nintendo and Nintendo 64.
My parter and i then got together with a PS2, and then recently we sold that, and bought the wii, and a PSP.

This is the first time EVER that i've had more than one console at one time though!

I've never really been a full on gamer until Mywii.com.au though! I like to play casually for fun, and to finish the mission! I'm kinda like omi in that respect! Games are there to be finished! lol

Looking forward to this thread!

Wii is definately not my first console. I'll never forget the day my Dad took me to Toys R Us to buy me my first NES. I was about 7 & would spend hours playing Zelda, Super Mario, & Duck Hunt. I have no idea what turned me onto video games but I love playing them & probably will not stop playing them. Between my boyfriend & I we have almost all the consoles even the crappy Sega CD.

Even my boyfriend was surprised when he found out I was playing the same games as him. I get just as excited as him when the new games or consoles come out. It's nice to know that there are other gamer girls out there just like me.

Parents were into video games when they were younger. Start watching them playing shooting games on Atari machines. As I got older began to play too, distinctively remember that duck shooting which was my favorite.

Maybe it wasnt attari....can't really remember but the machine with the big cartridges

After that went onto game boy when it first came onto the market. GBA followed. At this stage also became interested in computer games. Used to spend ages playing and got told off lots for not doing hw...:(

Now I mainly play my DS and Wii. I think I have always been a nintendo person.

Now with so many easy to play games and younger girls picking girl orientated games we are going to see a lot more girls playing in the future!

Growing up, I was always playing games with guys, my girl friends didn't have much interest in them apart from the odd game of tetris. I guess I've just gotten used to the fact that it is so male dominated. I just don't expect to see girls, well not many girls, in gaming forums, or buying games at a store, let alone being involved in the actual industry.

So is it this fact that we don't expect to be able to fit into this 'boys club' that we play in the shadows? That there aren't so many of us?

It's interesting that 3/4 of the girls that have posted (all four of them :-P) enjoyed Duck Hunt, for I too was a big fan! And now I love Link's crossbow training. How have you girls found that game? Maybe there's something about shooting things that us girls like!

I wish I could say that, I've got so many unfinished games going at the moment it's just not funny

Really? it just frustrates me not to finish a game! I usually wont play a new one until i'm finished the one i'm on.

It's weird because hardly do I every finish a game to the end. It probably has to do with I have a short attention span & get frustrated easily. I'll get half way through a game then I'll give up. 6 months later I'm back playing that same game again.

Because girls actually have things to say and not talk so much **** like us guys.

And they can actually carry on a conversation without having to 'lol' and 'pwnt' their way through every post to feel special.

because we can concentrate longer maybe?

anyway, I agree with you Omi, it's such a guy dominated industry, hell, when I walked into EB yesterday I was shocked to see the first female salesperson!

anyway, I started off with a GBC, and a PC, then a GBA, and now have PSP and DS, and of course, PC

See, I try to do that, but then some new game comes out and I just can't wait to play it! But then it happens again, another new game comes out that I just can't wait to play so the cycle repeats itself

Yay! Grab it, it's even better than duck hunt, mainly because there's no annoying dog I want to kill... BUT IT WOULDN"T LET ME! Tell us when you get it, we'll have a score comp! No one else wants to challenge me

kolpol9 said: Why are the girls posts so huge? we only do like 3 lines top.

Because we have brains! lol
Okay, not quite how I wanted to put it, my point being that girls are thinkers. Which is why I wonder that there aren't more of us playing games, looking at them in the way I was thinking, like a puzzle.

yeah, well, I barely know anyone (in real life) who really plays games.

the closest I have is a friend (guy, not girl), who plays, but isn't allowed to play very much (like...1/2hour a day on a school day, 1hour a day any other day), and he thinks I'm weird for playing.

It's hard getting them to understand what you know....they literally (though not all)think that we as girls know nothing about video games. Even when we tell them something useful, they still do not believe us....

ah yes there aren't many of us...why? who knows? what do you think the other girls do with their time instead?

I've currently got a DS, PSP (doesn't get used now), Xbox (same hasn't been touched for a few years), PC and a Wii (of course).

I did consider the Playstation but I think I have enough...

The gaming industry in Japan is really interesting. Obviously the female gamer demographic is larger but A LOT of games that are marketed in the west and PURE boys games are subtly marketed to women in Japan.

Metal Gear Solid 2 for example, Raiden's was designed with the aim of appealing to the female market (which had a fair bit of success) along with a lot of targetted marketing towards women. In the west though? It was all about the boys and Snake

Lol pwnt.

I want to try and get my girlfriend into video games. What should I start her off with? She'd like a two-player or coop game more than Tetris, I think.

Thought you'd like that.

Go for GH3 if you have that. Music is always a good starting place. Or simply Mario Party. Fun and Simple.
