Social \ Should I run video through my amp?

Hi all....

Here's my question. Would I be better off running my video signal through my amplifier? I have a pretty good amp which is capable of recieving component cables etc, but I've never gone to the trouble of setting it all up.

I don't have a HD TV however, but I have a really good SD Plasma TV if that helps with any comments. I am just interested as I read a thread on here talking about hooking up your amp to help with scaling or something. Anyway any help would be appreciated.

You should just try it. It couldn't hurt, could it?

I guess not. And...I probably will, in fact....you know I will.

I've run out of connections into the back of my TV now anyway so I just have to figure out which device goes through my amp.

Sorry I can't help you out with those details regarding Amps and your Plasma/LCD, simply because I don't own either...

Your amp can then be used as a switch. It wont improve the quality of picture.

hehe. But it would be good for multiple inputs, since you were running out of inputs into your TV...

Surely you must have some spare composite cables lying around...just connect those up. There, saved you some money lol

If your TV can run Component cables and you are using them, get them rather then composite as these is a big deal in image difference. Composite is crap

Even though you have been convinced already.....

If its not hooked up that way then technically your doing it wrong. The concept of the Amp (apart for amplifying the sound of course) is to enable all your compnents to plug into the one unit so that you dont need to screw around with your cabling.

DVD
CABLE TV
TV ------------- AMP ---------------Wii
VCR

Sorry that pic I drew above didnt work. DVD, CABLE, VCR should all be over and under the Wii if you know what I mean.. Bloody HTML.

This way you only need one output for video on your amp and everything else uses an input. The other thing with this is you would never be able to correctly connect your devices the current way you have it.

If you want to change from DVD to Wii, you would have to change the channel on the TV and then also on the Amp to get the audio. This new way, you just change the source (channel) on the Amp and away you go.

There is no question how this should be done. It should only be done the above way.

I don't mean that. Physical design of composite and component cables are identical. Obviously, the picture quality is higher because there are more video outputs for the component.

What i meant to say, was that you can use the spare composite cables lying around, and connect them up to the component outputs/inputs of the tv/device! Yes, the colours are different on the cables, but they still work! Just remember what colour cable you hooked up to between the two mediums, otherwise it won't work.

Yeah Phats right. You can easily do that.. just make sure they are of some quality however. There are some very Dodgy composite cables out there so be careful which ones you use.

lol...of course I am. Joking. If it's any help, I setup my girlfriend's DVD player like this for her TV. I was too lazy to go out and get the proper cables. Having done this, there's no point to buying dedicated component cables. To me, the only positive is that there's colour coding on the cables. A little bit more brain power will save you money

What do you mean by DVD, CABLE, VCR should be over and under the Wii?

Unfortunately my amp only has 2 component inputs. Although....I guess my cable TV doesn't really need to be component.

Sorry just o my little diagram they should all be in a line.. dont worry.

It becomes a problem when you only have a couple of inputs on your amp. Thats one difference between a cheap amp and an expensive one. More inputs. Like I said EVERY component should run through your amp, but seeing your limited then choose the two that you want the best sound from (normally anything that has digital Audio). The rest your just gonna have to deal with a direct connection to the TV.

So it goes....

2 Components (DVD and one more) >>>> Amp >>>> Video Out into Input of TV

Of course you should run video through your amp this allows audio sync as the video and audio is being processed at the same time by the amp. otherwise you occasionally get out of sync video/audio

Cool. My amp has 2 component inputs (one component output) and about a bazillion S-video inputs. Come to think of it now....it was something that was pretty cheap...although expensive when I bought it when I was at uni. ) Everything is relative.

I'm not too concerned with the sound as all my sound runs through my amp currently with no dramas. I have more audio inputs than you can poke a stick at. I've got 2 x optical audio inputs, and 2 x coaxial audio inputs not to mention the others.

My original question was in regard to amps that scale the video signal? I'm not too up on what that means.

I had the same problem....so i got one of those cables from JB (was the cheapest component cable too) that has a connection for all 3 consoles.

You are meant to connect and disconnect each as you use them however, yet...i don't.

With all 3 connected i would get video yet the Wii sound wasn't working. So i just use it for my ps3/360 and use a seperate one for my Wii. Still freed up a component connection though
