On the back of a PAL Cartridge there are two holes taken out and the socket of a PAL console has notches that fit into the holes, on an NTSC cart they are in a different place - making the cart not fit in a PAL console.

Solution: Open the 64 and cut the notches out with an Exacto knife.

I did this to one of my 64s and it works great.

The lockout chip didn't work on official Nintendo games, only crappy bootlegs or unauthorized ones. No crappy converter needed.

I actually discovered this by accident, I was messing around with a mates copy of Mario 64 (NTSC obviously) and was suprised when it worked without the notches, so I cut them out and the game fits as snug as a PAL game.
