I dont know why, but my theory is that they called it the Revolution at first because it is a revolution in gaming, how many other systems have you played games like you do on the Wii?

Thats just my theory anyway, there might even be real reason it was called the Revolution, i dont know, i just know my theory. lol

Because they were targeting the non-gamer and lapsed gamer demographics, which contain people who often didn't know that the GBA and the Gameboy Advance were the same thing.

The whole point was to make an immediately recognisable brand name that didn't need to be abbreviated.

LOL, i dont think they named it the Wii to get free advertising Cham-balam.

The name is Japanese, and Wii does not mean anything in Japanese. So somehow i dont think they intentionally made it funny.

it is an intentional play on words. wii sounds like we. as in more than one. the letters wii (ii) part symbolises two human forms. therefore more than one person playing.... simple really....

The console was known by the codename of "Revolution" until April 27, 2006, immediately prior to E3.[8] According to the Nintendo Style Guide, the name "is simply Wii, not Nintendo Wii." This means it is the first home console Nintendo has marketed outside of Japan without the company name featured in its trademark. While "Wiis" is a commonly used pluralization of the console, Nintendo has stated that the official plural form is "Wii Systems" or "Wii Consoles."[9] Nintendo spells "Wii" with two lower-case "i" characters meant to resemble two people standing side by side, representing players gathering together, as well as to represent the console's controllers. The company has given many reasons for this choice of name since the announcement; however, the most well known is:
“ Wii sounds like 'we', which emphasizes that the console is for everyone. Wii can easily be remembered by people around the world, no matter what language they speak. No confusion. No need to abbreviate. Just Wii.[10] ”

Despite Nintendo's justification for the name, some game developers and members of the press initially reacted negatively towards the change. They preferred "Revolution" over "Wii"[11] and expressed fear "that the name would convey a continued sense of 'kidiness' [sic] to the console."[12] The BBC reported the day after the name was announced that "a long list of puerile jokes, based on the name," had appeared on the Internet.[13] Reggie Fils-Aime acknowledged the initia

that's probably part of the reason pepper.

but still, the console was never called Revolution, much like the Gamecube was never called 'Dolphin'

Because Nintendo tentative system names are always better than the final one.

I remember the one of them (Gamecube?) was going to be called the Dolphin

gamecube
wii

Who is naming these things?

Diabollus, you're right. I had so much fun wiith the name. I also like to correct people who think it's pronounced 'why', even the 'W-two' (roman numerals? FTW) because they're lame and can't bring themselves to say wii.

anysways i love the name change, it's great for me and to talk about, but the only pathetic thing is talking to like school kids who have never heard of it, and saying

'dude i got a wii XD'

they are like WTF

but think about this guys, before launch many of us have spent a great deal of our time about the wii and things towards it, and yet, you walk around and people dont even know what it is

i dont think there where ever going to call the console revoulution like they werent going to call the gamecube dolphin but just gave them those names until they would think off something. its pretty funny (ironic) how people laugh at the name wii because they think it is childish and stupid when its so complicated with the symbols and stuff.

If you were out at a club whould you rather say to a girl..

1. Would you like to come back to my place and play with my Wii?
or
2. Would you like to come back to my place for a Revolution?
