Wii Hardware \ 480p or 576p?

As Im planning to upgrade to a widescreen LCD TV for Wii/media centre stuff, Ive been checking out specs of TVs trying to find one that supports a resolution similar to 480p. Little did I know that 480P is actually the NTSC screen resolution, and very few screens available in Australia in the 80-106cm range support 480P - They all support 1080i/p, 720p and 576i/p.

After a bit more digging, I found that PAL supports 576i/576p as the standard/ehanced definition resolutions, which explains why most of the TVs available in Australia only support these resolutions.

So if most Wii games are done in 480P(which is NTSCs format) does this mean that the PAL encoded games will be done in 576p to make themselves compatible with the resolutions of our TVs?

Ive always thought the NTSC screens looked different but never really could put my finger on why .... i guess thats what it is. Im not sure that all the latest flash screen specs will really matter when your sending a bowling ball down the lane. Wii seems to be really emersing and top notch screen res doesnt matter.

But then again i come from the old 8 bit days so it all looks nice and flash to me

Look at the Samsung TV's. The one with a HD tuner (cant think of model). Someone i know has purchased that for the Wii, and that would be the type of thing ya need. If ya dont want the Tuner, it comes cheaper without the tuner.

Nintendo's moved quickly to reaffirm that Wii will output in 480p, after Official Nintendo Magazine suggested it would offer higher resolutions.

According to reports, the official mag wrote: "At the time of going to print, Wii games will output in 720i and 720p - 720i is your standard TV picture."

But it turns out this was a simple mistake, with Nintendo UK confirming this morning: "Wii will output in 480p".

Nintendo UK also recently said that it had every invention of releasing peripherals like the component cable - used to achieve the 480p resolution - at retail, despite suggestions that you'd have to buy the cables through online shops in the US.

The interest in Wii's high-resolution options is of course spurred on by Microsoft and Sony's battling over the higher end. Both PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360 generally offer games in 720p, with 1080p now possible for developers who want to go the extra mile (well, the extra 1,152,000 pixels, anyway).

As far as I know 576p was chosen by Australia for Standard Definition Digital Television, but this shouldn't prevent a HDTV from outputing at 480p. I'm not sure of the extent that TVs are regionalized in that way, but I don't think you'll have any issues with getting any HDTV to output at 480p. The real problem is 480i. My Sansui 32" outputs fine at 480p, but when I run my xbox at 480i the screen is interlaced due to the fact that res is not supported on the TV.

Just ask to see the manual of any TV you're interested in and it'll list all supported resolutions on the first page with all the other specs. Seriosuly though, you shouldn't have any problem - just remember to get a wii component cable when it comes out.

Okay everyone, to clear things up - the PAL Wii will output at 480p with a component cable hookup and the progressive scan setting chosen in the Wii system settings.

If you are not using component cables and just using the supplied composite cables, the Wii will output at 576i (576 lines interlaced)

This is exactly the same as the Gamecube:

Component cable plugged in: 480i,60hz (non-progressive scan games)
480p,60hz (progressive scan games)

Composite cable plugged in: 576i,50hz (standard setting)
480i,60hz (games that support 60hz mode - there were a few on the Gamecube)
