Social \ PAL PS3 has less functionality, still $1000.

Sony has recently announced that the PS3s released in PAL regions will have only limited backwards-compatibility with Playstation 2 games, because as a cost-cutting measure they have removed the PS2 chip and replaced it with emulation software.

The PS3 will still be $1000 — almost $250 dollars more expensive than the US release, according to the exchange rate.

This is a kick in the nuts because most people who are buying a PS3 wil probably own a Playstation 2. If there was any reason to cancel your pre-order, here it is. Pay more, have less. Welcome to PAL.

This will annoy the people who were planning to play their ps2 games on the ps3, but for those who aren't, they're not even going to notice. Speaking from experience, i NEVER played a ps1 game on my ps2, so if i were to get a ps3, and those ps2 games i have weren't supported, it really wouldn't bother me.

Really? I was thinking it would have been the console with the poorest pre-order tally. A mate who works at Toys R Us says that since they opened pre-orders for the PS3 in the store, only 6 pre-orders have been made to date...compared to the Wii pre-orders that came by the truckload.

He misquoted the source, and a lacking source it is. Woolworths, of all places, stated that the PS3's pre-order numbers outstripped all previous units it has sold. Let me remind everyone that pre-order figures is certainly very different from actual launch sales. Wii had the biggest launch day in UK history, but it obviously wasn't the most pre-ordered, simply because supply was there (for the most part).

For $1k you can build a great gaming PC. You don't need Vista to run modern games. Remember the Sony Playstation doesn't have a monirtor, so a gaming PC without a monitor for $1k isn't terribly difficult, plus you can do heaps more with a PC than any PS3 can!

A PC cant plug into a regular TV like a console can though..you NEED a monitor.

While this is very true you have to think about all the other systems abd companies that do this like ninty won't give us all the japanese games or the feckin turbografx, We don't get the best of X-BOX, dvd's here get half the special features and off topic the phones are are much lower tech than elsewhere it sucks but when Australia rules the world we can bomb them so just sit-down and lie in wait until the time comes where we shall destroy them.HAHAHAHAHAAHAHAHAHAAHAHAAHAH.....

P.S Building a gaming P.C is very different to getting a top-of the range console. The grafics are no-where near as good, you have to keep upgrading the specs and that costs moe money, monitors cost more, games cost less but when you accoutnt for expansions they can be more, you need a good keyboard, mouse and space to put the huge system and the games arn't as good as you can usually get them on other consoles and they play better on other consoles. I mean all you have is MMORPG's and FPS's that are good but the majority are available on consoles anyway.
