Wii Hardware \ Wii + Wireless PC adapter or Network card?

Hey all,

Instead of buying the DS Wireless USB adapter to hook the Wii to the net, would it work with a wireless network card in the PC, or has Nintendo installed some weird setup that only works with their adapter? Just wondering as I don't have a wireless setup at home and am finding the cheapest alternative that works, otherwise it'll have to be the USB adapter from Nintendo.

Cheers

if you have a wireless router it will work, that adaptor they have is for the people who don't have a wireless setup

Yea I don't have a wireless router just a straight Netgear. So I guess the network card within the PC can't act as an access point for the Wii like the adapter?

it would need to be setup in adhoc mode or you would need to tell the network card in the pc to be an access port. unfortunately it is a one way operation. the wii looks for the connection. for it to see a connection, the wii needs to see either a usb wifi adapter or an access point. you need to get the network card in the pc to be discoverable to allow the wii to see it when it looks for a connection. i dont know how to do it, but a router is set to this in its native mode

cheers!

EDIT: just reading on another forum - the suggestion made there is to set the PC network card manually to the broadcast address on the subnet you are using eg: 192.168.0.254 they claim the wii should find it. i don't know it that would work though.

Haha how intresting i was pondering this same question last night but yeah i ended up getting a dlink di-524 off ebay for like $83 brand new (RRP: $119.00), just for the fact that i can do more with it than the nintendo usb adapter, plus usb wi-fi connections suck. Also it would pay to check nintendo's wi-fi page to see which routers are compatible if you do want to go that way.

Think I bought the same one just then - I'm having issues connecting it to the web as the installation process is bringing up some ICS error, any ideas mate?
