I'm aware that you can buy a Wii Component Video Cable, but I was wondering if anyone could tell me whether it's worth $50 for the higher quality?

Anyone answers would be greatly appreciated.

I noticed a significant difference between the quality of output with my gamecube. I'm fairly certain the same will be said for the Wii.

Can you only use them on the new tvs? i.e. LCDs Plasma's etc?

You can only use Component cables with tvs that have the right plugs in the back, I think CRT's would have them as well not just LCD and Plasma.

k Nucancer first of all ur normal tv runs at 480i rite, which is standard definition. Component cables allow you to run at 480p or enhanced definition. With normal cables you have composite which is red white and yellow. Yellow is video, white is left channel and red is right channel.

Component cables require you to have a component input. In component cables you have 5 connectors. Basically when you run on 480i (480 interlaced) the info is transmitted alternatively. that is first all the even pixels on your screen will be filled top to bottom on your tv. then on the next cycle the odd pixels will be filled. This happens at 50 hz so your eyes perceive it as simultaneous.

Component cables offer 480p (480 progressive) which means that every line is filled top to bottom consecutively on every cycle. so 1st line, 2nd line.. instead on 2nd line 4th line... To suffice this your cable needs to handle higher rate of data. so what they do is give you 5 cables and 3 of them are colours. i think red blue and green. So higher datarates can be acheived.

From what I've seen on a lcd or plasma you would do well to get component cables and even on flat screens but its not required for a normal CRT. if anything I have heard that the wii looks best on normal tvs with the cables provided.

Just heard that Component cables will not be available at launch in Australia. Cables will be made available up to a week after launch. Nintendo cannot make enough cables to meet demand.

Thanks for the definitive and helpful answer Ravi!
I was just interested to know if the cable was a must buy, but with my CRT I won't have to worry (that is at least, until I upgrade )

I am really sorry guys before i was a little wrong I think actually the other 2 video cables transmit signals like levels of saturation and stuff.

Basically you end up with a more richer colour and sharper edges

Its all about the colours Ravi. Say if you use the component cables and you only have green plugged in, you will have a picture on screen that has a green hue. I know because I did it with my Xbox 360. All three colours combine to give you a picture that is richer in colour and sharper than composite video

hmm naah zhaz, we're both right. like what i said initially is right but the cable with green hue also transmits general luminance information.

As I said before Kavin, you will not need the cable. Try it out on the supplied cables then if it looks crap go for the components.
