Just digg'in around and found this scary article on DRM.
Have a read.

Then chin up, and read this...

Even if people start locking down all the things that you buy, you can still give them the big middle one, as your neighborhood hacker will have cracked everything written. Except "Hello World", of course

In the first Beta stages MS were considering placing a backdoor into all Vista products for instant access.
They were concerned that with the increased security etc terrorists could hide easier...lol to that!
After a leak of the info and massive backlash they changed their mind, however I'd like to see the source...bet it's in there.

Just thank your lucky stars Palladium was never released

( en.wikipedia.org/ )

I will be getting vista. I will, however, be using a non microsoft firewall, and I will monitor *all* outgoing traffic, as mr M$oft I just dont trust.

Actually, Palladium is DRM. Its just a matter of time that DRM gets embedded into hardware, as is MS's plan. Im sure you'll find some of the proprietary drivers in Vista somewhere for DRM hardware support.

If you look a little further into it, DRM is Palladium re-born.
Heres another take on it. (Funny) news.zdnet.com/

As I understood it, Palladium was more hardware based, rather than the software alternatives.
I could be mistaken though

its hard to be a critic against microsoft for having DRM. we're facing a world where piracy is rampant.

Microsoft see a business opportunity in DRM as do many other companies. It's against the law to pirate - but ill be the first to admit im not innocent... hell, recording a tvshow onto your vcr is dubbed illegal.

But lets live in a realistic world, who can think of a better way to stamp out piracy and protect the rights of artists and record companies. I hate the MPAA - but we're living in a world based on the all mighty dollar. ppl dont do things for free, u need money, i need money, thats what its all about - protecting the rights of business to sell products to consumers. its not fair that some get things illegally and others abide the law.

Just look at the state of gaming - not even nintendo can protect their wii against pirates.... ninentedo may be making alot of money - but if they arent supported, then kiss nintendo goodbye and all the great games u enjoy - nobody with a brain makes something valueable and gives it away for free.

good for DRM - i support it!

What if you buy a CD, and want to put it on your MP3 Player? Sorry. You cant. Want to put that MP3 you have on your ipod onto your non-ipod device? Sorry. Not today sonny!

On another point, the guy that cracked the AACS (HD-DVD + Blu-ray encryption) make a good point in saying "If you can play it, it can be copied." And TBH, i agree. Nothing can stop you from playing music and looping it back to your MIC input, and simply record to a free format. So nuts to them.

I dont use any MS operating system. I prefer Linux. I dont think anybody should get Vista, especially if you are planning to run pirated or illegally obtained software/music. Vista just wont allow it!

lets be realistic - i have never known anyone to ever make a legitimate backup of a dvd or cd in my life.

i get around, ive been working in the IT sector for more than 5 years, the only backups we make are legitimate software of corporate copies for XP and 03.

its not justified to whinge that you cant make backups.... what your really saying to me is your a sloppy pathetic individual who cant put a cd back in its case instead of throwing it across the room and playing frisbee with the dog. thats how cds get scratched. i admit, kids can do it - but your a poor parent if you cant monitor your kids activities.

as for mp3s... hey, i appreciate that.... but you have to draw the line. infecting things with drm is the only way to do it - its the only way u can prove a mp3 is legit.

there will never be a happy medium - its like the conversion from vhs to dvd.... ppl whinge that u cant play your old tapes in the dvd player.... think in the future - you dont need to buy cds anymore, u download them.

Ive got piles of backup CDs in my car. Simply because im sometimes too busy driving to put them back in the case. Not to mention, having a case of 50 original cd's stolen that weren't backed up. That was a devastating day. If I like a band, i buy the CD. Simple enough. If i buy a CD, i should be able to do anything i want with it. Even if its listening, play Frisbee or make backups
