Social \ HD TV or NOT?

Hi guys just read this now taken from the TECH section of Herald Sun . Thought u guys might wanna know.

Anyone intending to buy a TV should read.

Many models are being advertised as high-definition ready - a meaningless phrase that in most cases tells you the set is certainly not high definition.

So what is a HD set and how can you tell? This the question uppermost in buyers' minds and the good news is there's a simple answer.

Right now we tend to call a TV a HD model if it can display digital TV to its highest resolution, which, by the way, isn't saying all that much.

The most detailed Aussie digital TV programs are broadcast with a 1080i resolution.

The i stands for interlaced and the 1920x1080 pixel picture image is built in two sweeps, 25 times a second for each sweep.

The odd lines are displayed on the first sweep and the even lines on the second.

TVs with even greater picture resolution - 1920x1080P - are available.

It was market as having a HD tuner somewhat meaningless after reading that article

As you say, Australian broadcasting standards are at best 1080i (channel 9 and 10). ABC broadcast at 720p, and seven and sbs at 576p. Even at these resolutions, they are only required to transmit 20 hours a week of actual high resolution TV.

That 32" samsung r series is available for about $1800 bucks if you shop around and haggle and is a damn good price for a quality tv of that size.

For my money, there is no point in owning a 1080p TV at this point in time because there is not enough hardware out there that will actually display a picture at its full potential.

If i was you (and i did it myself by the way), i would buy that samsung r series tv (i'm really happy with mine) and wait for the HD-DVD/Bluray war to have a clear winner, and also for laser TVs to come out next year.

Why spend 4000+ on a 1080p TV when you can get a TV for under 2000 that will display a picture just as good for the majority of uses at the moment???

Lots of good info, like this little tidbit:

"When dealing with HDTV sets, they each have their own native display format. This means the signal which it can support as displaying without alteration of that signal via downconverting or upconverting (which I will touch on in a minute) This native display will either be 1080i or 720p. Most, if not all, LCD fixed displays will support 720p natively. Most RPTV's, CRT's - will support 1080i natively.

Here comes the tricky part. A lot of the less expensive sets out there, and even some of the others, will only accept either a 720p signal, or 1080i signal. If it sees a signal come in that it doesn't natively support, the set will downconvert the signal to 480p automatically so it can display the image. For example, you have a 51" Model WS500/510 that displays 1080i as it's native resolution. The program you are trying to view, or the game you are trying to play, is transmitting at 720p. This particular set will see the 720p signal, and downconvert this to 480p. Making this particular set, when receiving anything but 1080i native signals, essentially nothing more than a glorified EDTV."

is it the refresh rate of the old games
or that my tv is progresive scan?

Everything looks terrible due to the larger pixel size, and after being on HDTV it is sooo noticable. Mitsubishi has announced Laser TV's will be released by christmas which have a much higher colour saturation and contrast than LCD and Plasma whilst being cheaper and more energy efficient. I am hangin out for one of those so for my own personal HDTV.

I have a 32" Plasma & I don't have any problem with the VC games that people keep mention with the 480p setting, so I think it must be something with the TV causing an isue.

Most DLP Rear Projection TVs are native 720p and many front projectors are 720p. The latest DLP and LCOS RPTVs are 1080p. The other benefit is that DLP and LCOS have excellent scaling ability. That is, fed with something other than their native resolution they tend to still look really good. The same cannot be said of LCD displays. For example LCD (native 1368x768 pixels) HDTVs do not scale any resolution well. They only look OK in smaller screen sizes. Plasma dislays are in between but they have a far more problematic issue, screen burn-in.
