Wii Hardware \ Virtual Console - the new Playstation? (in terms of dodgey games...)

I was having a discussion with some mates a while back about why the PS line has been so successful and one of them came up with a theory that some of it may have something to do with how easily illegal copies of the games could be acquired. I never really noticed this but when you think about it, it makes a little sense.

In asia for example, with their blatant disregard for intellectual property meant that games are sold on the street for as little as $2AUD. My cousins in (sorry, better not say the actual place but let's just say south-east asia) for example have both the PS1 and PS2 but do not own any legitimate copies of any games but have well over 200 games for each system and it seems this is far from uncommon over there. Nobody uses a nintendo there mainly because it is more difficult/inconvenient to make copies of nintendo games (i.e. cartridge and then a slightly smaller disc). So even though the games weren't doing so well, the console itself did very well as that itself would be very difficult to copy.

cont.

Similarly, the virtual console might lead to an easy way where people can download illegitimate copies of games for small amounts of money (if not none at all). This has already happened with the DS as several mates of mine have "flashed" theirs and are basically downloading free games, sticking them on a flash card and playing them on their DS's. (some even buying the DS solely for dodgey games...) I wonder if this is possible with the Wii because if it is then illegitamate games could find easy access to the Wii leading to the Wii finding similar success, especially in countries such as those mentioned above.

(Sorry for the long post guys, i think it's becoming a trademark...)

hahaha, that wasn't exactly the point of this discussion but i'm not too sure myself, i haven't done it for my own reasons... BUT, they took it to a guy who flash-capabled their DS's and then presto. Not sure who he is or how he did it but google is a good place to start i guess.

Getting illegal games is one thing but you still want them to be good.

Considering the big three factor piracy costs into their software prices, people who buy authentic versions are getting screwed to the max. That DS flash news is very intresting wegus, i will look into it.
When i was in china a few years ago nintendo was getting nailed by the pirates as well. I bought GBA carts for AU$30.00 with 10 or more GBA games on them plus hundreds of GB and NEs games as well. As for the SNES and 64 there was Cd Burners that connected to the parallel ports on the bottom of both consoles allowing you to sore tons of cart games on a single CD. In china they seem to be able to find ways to pirate any system, i just think that world wide the playstation consoles have just had more mass appeal.
