Boot up from a live cd and copy the files to another disk so you don't lose them then re-format?

Hard drive corruption. If formatting from a live cd doesn't work, you will have to buy a new drive.
www.ubuntu.com/ for a live cd of ubuntu linux for backing up data and reformatting the hard drive.

Read this: www.michaelstevenstech.com/
If you don't have a Windows CD, borrow a friends. And if not then just download Ubuntu Live CD like others had suggested. You could also try BartPE (here: www.nu2.nu/ saved me a few times.

Ubuntu starts loading before windows, its it's own operating system. Just put the disc in before your computer boots.

So I put the disc in, then what.
Is that when I can backup?
Save all my stuff?
Then is my computer just buggered?

Have you still got your XP CD??

While BIOS is booting, press set-up (It is only displayed for a few seconds) and it'll either be F8, F12, Del or something line that. Change the boot drive to CD ROM (this way it doesn't have to be a live CD) and it should come up with XP set-up. Tell it to repair, get ya files back then use Linux or whatever OS you want and format ya HDD.

In steps for ya man

1) Burn the Ubuntu CD to a disc
2) Go into your BIOS at boot up (the motherboard menu)
3) Go to "advanced" or something
4) change "first boot device" from "hard disk" to "cdrom" or something
5) Restart the computer with the disc in
6) It will load up another operating system from the disc
7) With another storage device (CD, USB, HDD) backup all the files you want
8) Re-install windows XP after formatting the HDD.

We had this same discussion awhile ago... In fact I think it pops up every couple of months!

I think we can all happily say that your answer will not be found here. This issue has many different variants. It can either be Software or Hardware problems that cause this... Generally speaking I doubt its a missing file.. as it will error out. I personally have seen this issue and it was a hardware fault. I think the last time it showed up, we argued if it could have been a faulty USB for that particular person....

Just take it to a shop and get them to run a heap of tests... thats the best way if your not capable of doing them yourself.

I'm almost 200% sure it's not a virus. my guess is corrupt boot files.

DO NOT FORMAT C: UNTIL YOU HAVE TRIED EVERYTHING. even with a backup, its a bi@#$ to set up again.

you have the exact same computer as me. and I had a similar problem. Once you fix it there is a box that u need to untick. Right click on my computer and hit properties. go to the advanced tab. under startup and recovery hit settings. and untick the box under the system failure that says automatically restart. this way when the blue screen pops up with the error message, you can read it and you at least know what your dealing with. UNFORTUNATLY that is a bit hard to do if your computer is not working. what i suggest is to boot from a "windows operating system disk" and go to recovery. and type chkdsk /r or type chkdsk /p and hit enter

this will repair any boot.ini problems that you might be having. Sometimes boot files can corrupt at a random time, i don't know why but it has happened to most of my computers at one time or another. you will not loose anyfiles by doing a chkdsk /r or /p.

post back if you are still having troubles. happy computing

boot up in safe mode, does it work?

If yes, from the task bar or desktop:

Right click on "My Computer"
Select "Properties" menu option
Click on the "Advanced" tab
Click the "Settings" button in the "Startup and Recovery"
Uncheck "Automatically restart"
Click the "Ok" button.

Reboot your PC and do that "Start Windows Option again"..

Chances are with patience your computer would hange with a blue screen. Ignore all the mumbo jumbo, and you should see a short English sentence that will tell you what the problem is. What does it say?
