Wii Software \ Resident Evil 4 Wii - Blurry?

I've just picked up a second-hand copy of RE4 Wii Edition and I'm not sure if I'm being paranoid, but the game (menus and gameplay) seems too blurry? Is this just a factor? It's been a while since I played the Gamecube version on an older television to what I currently use.

I've got my Wii set to display on EDTV/HDTV (progressive scan?), and have also tried running in 60hz mode, but it doesn't seem to matter as far as my eye can determine. I'm using component cables also. My TV is a 26" Samsung HDTV (but not full 1080p) I won't go into any other specifics.

If anyone has any suggestions or comments (or if you've also noticed blurriness) please write something constructive. It's just that I seem to think I remember the Gamecube version appearing much less blurry than the Wii version.

You gotta use Component cables, not the supplied composite cables. That can be the cause of blurryness...

As I stated above I'm using Official Nintendo branded component cables. I don't seem to remember noticing blurriness in other Wii games I've played recently.

As a side note: This may also be a result of me having been playing lately REMake on my Wii - perhaps my eyes have become used to the pre-rendered backgrounds and I'm being too picky about the quality of RE4Wii?

Hmmmm, I think you're being paranoid.

I've run both the cube and the Wii version on the same display and both look (excepting the proper widescreen) identical.

If your LCD is bigger than your old TV, it may account for some of the difference that you're noticing.

In addition to that, even in progressive scan mode, LCD displays tend to highlight those famed 'jagged edges'

Plus the human mind works in wonderful ways. The first time I played RE4 I was so blown away by the presentation and engrossed in the atmosphere of the game that I never would have noticed some of the blemishes I've picked up on during the many subsequent play-throughs.

Blind, completely blind. Playing the GC version on a GC via standard composite cable i finished the game about 12 times. When i jumped onto the 480p Wii Version via component on the same TV revealed a huge jump, especially in texture resolution. I saw the difference all the time, but the biggest difference was in the castle, the wall textures and bricks were far clearer and sharper than the GC version. The whole game looks far better than the GC version. Unless of course the GC version plays in 480p when played through a Wii via component, but i havent tried that myself.

I think that may be the case. Make sure the Wii is definatly displaying in 480p. Otherwise i think its just your eyes comparing the pre-rendered goodness of the remakes to the actual 3D RE4.

Nope, I have component cables for my cube and run the game in progressive scan. The difference is in the aspect ratio (and aiming reticule as opposed to laser dot thingy) only.

Ohhh i see. I'm comparing the 480i gc version to the 480p wii version. The Wii version is still superior with it's anamorphic 16:9. I dunno what Capcom were smoking when they made the GC version non-anamorphic.

We're on the same page there.

Hardly any companies took advantage of GameCube's abilities. Factor Five showed how it was done in Rogue Leader and Rebel Strike providing widescreen support at 60hz.

Am I also to assume that having partial black space to the left and right side of my television screen picture is normal when playing RE4 Wii? My Wii is set to play in 16:9 aspect ratio and my television is wide screen and is set to display at 16:9... this is the first I've seen a Wii game not taking up the entire screen. Is this just a result of the game being a remade GC title? i.e. is this normal?

By the way, my television model is a Samsung 26" LA26R71BDX.

How much black are we talking about here? I've never noticed any in RE4 but will check this evening.

It may be similar to what happened in Metroid Prime 3: Corruption. In MP3, the widescreen resolution was not the full 854x480, the horizontal res was only about 825 pixels, which meant thin black borders.

Ok well, I wish I could accurately take a picture of the image quality I have, what with the text in-game I think being too blurry and all, but any pictures I take will suffer from a degredation in quality regardless.

Here's what I mean by horizontal black bars to the sides. Yes dossaer, it does seem as though RE4 for Wii is only projecting at about a res of 825x480 and not 854x480.

You should have seen how poorly the GC version looks on a TV like that. There is huge borders on all four sides. But if i remember correctly, when i had my Wii set up on a 52" screen in 480p 16:9, i am 99% sure it totally filled the screen. It looks like something to do with your Tv settings.

Well if that's the case then why do my other Wii games such as Twilight Princess and Mario Galaxy display without those bars?

These black bars I have noticed also appear on Gamecube games played on the Wii.

bobg, you say you get black horizontal bars on your Wii when playing RE4 Wii Edition also - what are you specific settings on your Wii and what kind television are you using + cables?

Just checked it! And yeppers, black borders (actually a bit bigger than the ones in Metroid Prime 3)

I've been that engrossed that I never noticed!

Well that makes me feel somewhat more secure knowing that it does affect at least some others besides me, although I'm still a bit annoyed. I've been doing some googling and apparently it happens to some people on Monster Truck Madness Wii and MOHAA Heroes 2 Wii...

Some TVs are actually 16:10 displayes (like my PC monitor) but i dont think they tell u about it. This may have something to do with it.

As I've said twice before I already use official Nintendo component cables.

I hope it's not the quality of the game - but to be honest I think if a game was going to be below standard in terms of quality then I don't see why it should work at all let alone with black bars or my opinion of it being blurry in general.

I wish I knew someone else with a copy of RE4 for Wii so I could determine this.

As discussed earlier the black bars are here for all. Some of us (like me) just hadn't noticed them. I spent a full minute or two pondering this last night and decided it was because my LCD display has black casing and the black bars 'just kinda blended in' it was only after I was prompted to look that I noticed.

As for the blurriness I have run both the GC & Wii versions on the same display and stick by what I said earlier: "both look (excepting the proper widescreen) identical"

The GC version had black bars (top and bottom) for a pseudo widescreen look (great if you used your displays zoom function).
I would assume that the Wii versions 16:9 mode utilises a bit of crop and zoom. Because Capcom would have used the same graphical assets, you're getting a closer look at the textures; hence still images may look marginally worse by some standards. But to counteract this you get progressive scan making things look better in motion.

Many people wouldn't have noticed as the last time they played the game it would have been on GC or PS2 running composite cables (and possibly on a smaller display)
