Wii-mote review/retrospective - 8/10

Wii controller Retrospective/review

As of its launch, the Nintendo Wii was a definite change in the way people play games, and the way games are made. With its new and interesting controls, we didn’t know what to expect when it debuted.

While some games are basic, and have no overall motions, (such as Guitar hero, Smash Bros., and Super Paper Mario) some are new, interesting, and have brought something new to old franchises.

So, let me sum up the history of the Wii-mote.

November 19, 2006

The day marked the Launch of the Big N’s newest console, the Nintendo Wii.

Red Steel

The First game announced for the new console had an interesting control scheme.

One of the few First-person-shooters on wii, Ubisoft’s new product, was the story of how the protagonist had to find his the goons who tried to kill his Fiancée’s father, who also captured his bride-in-waiting.
You point the Wii remote at the screen as if it were a gun.

This was one of the best and worst things about the game, as it made aiming easier, but cramped player’s hands. Another motion feature was sword fights, as this was considered a Japanese-style game. This wasn’t the only launch-day title that had players playing with swords.

Overall, it turned out to be a mediocre game, not the worst on the first day, considering it came out on the same day as Cars. We would see these controls perfected later on in the console’s life.

Wii sports

If you haven’t played this one, you must not have any friends who own a Wii. I shouldn’t even have to sum this up, though I will. It is a sports game, where you use the controller to play Baseball, Tennis, Golf, Bowling and Boxing. For the first time you play it, you will be amazed at how real this is. Many people accuse Nintendo of not having enough sports, (as they could’ve had Basketball and hockey) but those kind of people can’t admit that they’re playing a great game.

Legend Of Zelda: Twilight Princess

Legend Of Zelda was about just Locking on, pressing the button for you sword, solving puzzles, and using all kinds of weapons. The Best-looking LOZ installment to the Wii was actually the last game on the game-cube. It had a dark, more involved, story behind it, but the most interesting thing about twilight princess was the controls. The Wii-mote, when attached to the Nun-chuck, became a sword. You would also aim weapons with the Wii-mote like seen in Red steel.

Link is ready to save Hyrule again.

Super Mario Galaxy, Metroid Prime 3, and other FPS games.

Super Mario Galaxy

One of the Best Action-Platformers ever, SMG had an interesting control scheme on the Wii market. With a flick of the wii-mote, you could defeat enemies as you roam the galaxy as everyone’s favorite plumber. Also, from an overhead angle, you could shoot your enemies with the press of the button. Like Twilight Princess, this is one of the Greatest games of all time, and might not be so with out a unique control scheme.

Metroid Prime 3: Corruption

Another FPS game. This particular game was very similar to Red Steel. Only Without Multiplayer, and it got the controls right. It made Gameplay less tiring (to the hands), like it should be. Samus Aran finished the trilogy with a bang, and made way for new games on Wii.

Since MP3, Wii shooting games have been coming out more often. These include Ghost Squad, Link’s Crossbow training, Resident Evil Umbrella Chronicles, and more. All this, thanks to a vital addition, The Zapper, a peripheral addition shaped like a gun.
Even More games of the genre will be arriving on wii, including a possible Call Of Duty 5, a possible Red Steel 2, James Bond (essentially where FPS games started), and the highly anticipated The Conduit.

Star Wars

Lego Star Wars added a fun new look to a movie Franchise, just Like the wii edition added a fun addition to the gameplay. With your Wii-mote as your Lightsaber, and your Nunchuck Wielding the Force, Players actually felt like they were Jedi Knights. This Control scheme added some fun and new gameplay to a small, stale, two-part series. These controls will also be used in "Star Wars: the Force Unleashed".

Mario Kart Wii

The seventh Mario Kart game was another game with interesting controls. Though allowing four different controllers, it introduced another motion peripheral, the wii wheel, which was a fake steering wheel with a place to put your wii-mote, and pretend you’re driving a car! Though Faulty controls did not help the game, as critics did not like the latest installment as much as the previous six.

Anyway, time to give the final words.

The Wii-mote and Nun-chuck are interesting Controllers, and Nintendo should be commemorated for this bold move. Indeed, when you play certain games such as Super Smash Bros. Brawl, Mario Galaxy, Wii Boxing, or Twilight Princess, you have a sense of “Pwnage” as it were. It has a nice grip, and great addition peripherals, with the Wheel and Zapper.
So, for interesting Controls, bold design moves, and also slight faulty motion-sensors, I give the Wii Remote and Nun-chuck an 8/10.
